Not suggesting we buy into this now as the game is still in early access, but damn... this game has a lot going for it: Developer is predominantly ex-Blizzard employees that left Blizzard after it was bought by Activision. A balanced mix of PvE and PvP that offers a bit of something for everyone. Offers a mix of gameplay seamlessly; resource/base management, tower defense, exploration, and base sieges all happen dynamically. Large player population limits for servers; we can all play together towards common goals. Allows for private servers with the tools to create a stronger gaming community. Premium game with no micro-transactions or subscription fees. Much more than just "another survival game", REND has an ACTUAL ending; yes, you can "beat" the game. Epic viking mythology themes, music, and world. Game is still in early access, but I think this is something worth keeping on our radar. I like that it offers a lot of the flexibility and progression that Ark offers, but has undeniably better realized objectives for players to focus their efforts towards. It also has RPG player class elements similar to more traditional MMORPGs, but combines that with much better combat and strategic mechanics. And here is a longer review from someone who doesn't even like survival games, but still likes REND for all the things it does better: Again, this is Early Access and I'm not suggesting we should buy this now. No idea when this is getting a release, but this seems like a game we should definitely keep an eye on.
What if rend ends up like space engineers and is in development forever? Though to be fair SE is their side project for developing an AI.
Ha. yeah, right? Seriously though, I think it's safe to say we will get our money's worth out of Ark long before Rend reaches full release. That's the plan anyway. To answer Fet's question. I have zero interest in buying Rend until it shows clear signs of being a complete game. I'm really done fucking about with Early Access games. Good news is that Rend is being developed by a talented team and they are making really good progress.
While still fun for the building stuff (and some mods are awesome) rend will probably be released before SE becomes what we wanted it to be. Heck I think it is still in early access. I would say I got my money's worth out of it. But now I wouldn't buy it at it's full price. But enough of SE in a thread not about SE. I'm going to keep an eye on REND.
Yeah, even though I've been following SE's development for a long time, I can no longer in good faith recommend it to our group. There's just not much of a "game" there and doesn't appear there will ever be. It's more of a physics building sandbox. By comparison, Rend looks like it will have better focused goals for players to attain and clear threats for them to overcome.
An update on the development of the game: https://www.mmorpg.com/rend/previews/rend-early-access-preview-1000013115 Notably: That being said, SteamCharts doesn't lie: https://steamcharts.com/app/547860 As much as I see the potential for this game, its lack of popularity with the general public does not look encouraging. And unfortunately, the nature of this game requires it to be "popular" to actually work at all. I think one particular reddit user summed it up best: https://www.reddit.com/r/rendsurvival/comments/9oyrqy/game_dead/ A true shame, really.
