    First a summary:
But this is not the Space Engineers you knew from two or more years ago. The game has grown substantially with improvements in many important ways. If I had to break it down, its sort of "Minecraft" meets "The Expanse" with working physics, vehicles and better enemies (yes, enemy AI works now). There is a lot more to it as well, but the best part is you don't have to take my word for it.

However, if you want more info, keep reading:

With voting for recommended games about to start, I would like to highlight the huge progress made on Space Engineers and why it could be a great game for us to embrace as a community.

This is a game that has been in full development by indie dev Keen Software House since before 2013. It is almost unheard of to see a reasonably sized dev team show this much dedication for a single project for such a long time. I'm still a bit mystified as to how they were able to stay on budget, but the results speak for themselves.

There is A LOT to unpack here, so let me start by "showing" not telling:

    Graphical, Audio, & Gameplay Improvements!

Huge UI & Tutorial Improvements! (video is older, but gives a decent summary)

    Character Progression & Customization!

    Scripted Campaign Scenarios!

(This is the tutorial campaign, but there are others available as well).

Large Scale PvE & PvP Multiplayer:
    • Standard servers support for up to 16 players at once (PvE or PvP); however, this limit can be increased as needed with better server hardware.
    • Hosts/Admin can load custom scenarios for players upon request.
    • Cross-server persistence & Blueprint creation: load in your favorite creations from a previous server/scenario.
A Massive Modding Community: tons of pre-built worlds ready to download and explore!

    Sandbox Gaming At It's Best:
    • Play the way you want to: builder, miner, pilot, soldier, etc.
    • Engage in gladiatorial combat for glory, bragging rights, (and profit?).
    • Design or test drive the vehicle of your dreams in a physics-based world.
    • Objective-based survival: expand your base, explore the planet, eliminate hostiles, etc.
    • Contend with NPC threats: defend against aliens, hostile military, and rogue AI entities.
A Throwback To The Golden Age of PC Gaming:
    • No micro-transactions, no subscription fees, no F2P bullshit.
    • No experience grind or pay walls.
    • Supports public AND private servers.
Oh yeah... and last but definitely not least... MECH COMBAT! :hatchetbump:

I took the time to test out the game in a dedicated server. Wow... what a difference. I'm getting 90 FPS and Server Simulation Speed (basically lag) holds steady at 100% (which is perfect). We got a working game here, people!

Since most of us own Space Engineers already and I'm pretty certain Avorion is not getting released in the next two months. I'm going to bite the bullet and get a premium server for us. I've seen ample evidence to suggest there is a ton of content here for us to dive into.

The dedicated server will be up and running later today so go download Space Engineers ASAP and we will get something going this weekend while it is still free to play for everyone.

    I'm still tweaking settings, but...

    SERVER IS LIVE AND BUTTER-SMOOTH!:toast:

Currently running at 120 FPS and 100% Simulation Speed for both server and client. Basically no lag to speak of. That is about as good as it gets.

Best of all, you don't need to mess with any mod subscriptions. Everything you need auto-downloads when you join the server for the first time. Just let it do its thing.

A few bits of advice if you are jumping right in on your own:
    • If you are new to the game or forget the basics, start a "New Game" and play the tutorial scenarios first to get a feel for the basics.
    • On our server, you can join the Skjaldborg faction by selection the factions menu when you first spawn in. This will help in coordinating our efforts.
    • I highly recommend using the "Earth" start. The other moons are extremely hostile environments with some nasty surprises.
    • Watch out for occasional roaming bands of rival NPC factions. Some will ignore you as long as you aren't in their way, but some will actively seek you out. You are generally safe from attacks if you are underground or stay on the move.
    • I recommend using your rover's equipped ore detector to locate a good spot for an underground mining outpost ASAP. Your rover is also equipped with a survival kit that can refine trace minerals from stone material and build basic parts to get your base established.

First off, thank you to everyone who could make it last night to the SE event! I'm glad everyone had fun!

I didn't take a bunch of pictures, but here's a group of us in some vehicles we spawned on our way to assault a pirate base:
    20190302230321_1.jpg

That being said, I want to extend an apology to the community about the delays to the event yesterday. I did absolutely everything in my power to have it ready for us. Unfortunately, tech support for the server provided (VILAYER) is the absolute WORST and fucked me over pretty completely. This derailed everything I had planned for us. I did manage to get it working later last night, but I know it was too late for some of you by that point. Again, I am very sorry you missed out. We will do more in the near future.

The server is currently up, but I plan to continue optimizing server settings for the best experience possible. Be aware that this *may* require one more server reset this weekend before it is ready. Please contact me if you have any questions about the server.

My long term plan is to have a persistent survival server with occasional planned exhibition creative events (smiliar to last night) that will allow everyone to immediately jump into the fun without any grind or building required.

And here's a fun video of more Space Engineer's shenanigans!

Anyone up for some Top Gun action in our next outing? :glee:

Man. Those missiles are clunky. The 2 torpedo block mods are way less clunky (also I think the damage was toned down on them. They didn't seem to do anywhere near as much as they used to). You can live without them though.

you can do 1 block wide missiles too that look like "proper missiles". i think the design in that video is an older version... or it could be that he just wanted to incorporate the vanilla merge block to lauch them (which is admittedly huge).

I plan to add the 1 small block merge block which will look a lot better

starting my base (maybe everyones?) on the server. So far it just survival kit, basic assembler and basic refinery a small cargo container. And working on O2/H2 generator (more for the hydrogen since Don't really need oxygen on earth planet). Stone is refined (in the survival kit, and both refineries) into Gravel, Iron Ingots, Nickel Ingots, Silicon Wafer. You don't get as much iron from stone as you would from iron ore. If you build your own base don't break down the survival kit on the pod till you are ready to finish the one on the base. Medical components can only be built in the basic assembler and assembler but not in the survival kit.

Read somewhere wind turbines need to be at least 4 blocks above the ground to work (higher is probably better).

Wind turbine power mechanic is actually pretty simple. There are 3 factors:

    • How close it is to sea level - wind is much stronger the lower you are located. Notably some of martian mountains are extremely high and wind turbines barely work there.
    • How high it is on a grid. I think something like "at least 6 blocks up" is optimal.
    • If there are any blocks close to it preventing full clearance.
Their max output is 400kW IIRC.

And apparently they would work in a cave. Also need 4 blocks between turbines (if you have multiple). Could do 5 on a tower (each lateral facing and 1 on top. With their size they would need to be offset 1 block from the tower).
