Several species of camel spiders, actually... something like 1000. according to wikipedia there are 143 genera.

But, another type of arachnid is the boatsmen or harvestman, also known as the daddy long legs:

They are not spiders because of their lack of a body divided into two parts, and rather have a large central blob, so to speak. There are something like 6500 species divided into four suborders; Cyphophtalmi, whose members are usually smaller, Eupnoi, usually living in america and east asia, Dyspnoi, the smallest of the groups, who live only in the northern hemisphere and Laniatores, who are (relatively) short legged.

I have golden Orb spiders in my back yard. Most annoying spider I have ever seen or had the pleasure of having living near me. During summer they explode into a race of "who can cover this yard in the most web possible" Normally I'd be cool with this as spider web is easy to get rid of.. Golden Orb web however is stupidly strong and sticky. To the point where if there are enough strands wrapped together you have a hard time breaking it with a broom/stick/golf club.

That said they have a great habit of getting rid of pests.

I'm quite the arachnaphobe. Not that I go "kill them all" but man do they creep me out.

And on a bad day I get nightmares reading a thread like this.

Fortunately this isn't a bad day!

We used to get one or more of some species of Golden Orb setup a nest not far from our front door in a bush every spring/summer. Made some quite beautiful webs. Still got the pictures *somewhere* but I can't find them.

I dont understand why People are actually afraid of them. I can understand to find them ugly, I dont think they are that beautifull too but to be afraid of them? But actually i think the blue Tarantula is really beautifull and all spiders in upclose pictures where you can not see the legs. For me its the long 8 Legs that make them look ugly. And theyre walking is creepy :D.

Brain Stem Terror isn't logical. It just is. I have no problems with spiders. Snakes (or No-Shoulders as my boss likes to call them) on the other hand cause me to break into a cold sweat. I can't control it. It just IS. Pure terror. I've tried to get over it, but so far no luck. I'm guessing people with the fear of spiders have a similar issue.

This describes it really well. I know how beneficial spiders are, I know how cool they are, I like them, but for some reason they just scare me. I can't see one and not start shivering in barely-controllable fear.

Now snakes... I catch snakes in my yard barehanded no issue. They're cool.

Knowing that they damage you far out of proportion to their size is probably enough. Same thing with some types of hornets/wasps. A bee sting can kill someone whose allergic to them, and the damn things are smaller than my finger.

I don't care for spiders and bees in case you can't tell :unamused:

Hmm i guess i only act and do things with my brain and never get emotional thats why i dont feer anything that is not a real Threat. In Austria there is no animal that can kill a human with the exception of i guess 6 Bears in the hole country. So when I see spiders i kinda of act with them just like with a Dog dump. I dont touch it but i dont fear it either :D. BUT I love Snakes i think they are beautifull. So i guess I am never afraid of anything before it doesnt happen. Like I am not afraid to even die before I dont see that i will die XD.

Sounds a bit like I am showing off but honestly I am not. I think its rather stupid because Fear is natural mechanism to protect us...

    Holy Heebie-Jeebies Batman! *shudders*

That's a good description, Grim. I have never been bitten by a spider - and though I have been stung by wasps on 3 occasions, having one buzz around me doesn't inspire the Blue-Screen-Of-Death effect in my brain that seeing a spider causes... and it's weird. My partner and I have a mutual agreement - if we see a spider, he kills it while I run away screaming. If we see a snake, I kill it while he runs away screaming.

    It all works out. :)

considering I live in a country with what.. 8 of the top 12 worlds most deadly snakes, and some of the worlds most deadly spiders. Yeah, I'm kinda afraid of both. Bears/Tigers ext don't cause fear as much as a spider or the sight of a snake does.

Well i guess i would feel a little bit uneasy too when seeing a spider or snake in your country :D. I mean Austrialia has like the deadliest spider, snake and the deadliest of every poisonous creature :D
