    Dear fellow Skjaldborfigans,

My Asus laptop just recently kicked the bucket after a long, drawn-out and frankly embarrassingly graceless death. After a brief yet respectable mourning period, I've realized I need a replacement and I think I'm emotionally ready to move on. I've already got a solid gaming rig so I only need it for general university note-taking/paper-writing and web surfing, as well as on-the-go music production. Any suggestions that won't cost an arm and a leg?

    Yours sincerely,
    Stynnes

business segment laptops arent that expensive ... you can easily find an asus laptop with an i3 or i5 - 4-12gb ram and some 1-2tb hdd (with crappy graphiccard - but you dont need a good one) for 400-600 dollar --> take one from last year for maximum gain for a small price

    Somnething like: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230533&name=Laptops-Notebooks

Edit: You dont want ANY HP or Acer laptop (shoddy build quality) :D

Lenovo laptops don't seem very trustworthy either. My dad has a lenovo laptop and the wireless keeps cutting out has to turn off and back on.

Lenovo Thinkpads are great laptops, they are basically IBM Thinkpads. But their lower end stuff is garbage. They do come with a ton of crap ware though, so you are better off uninstalling a bunch of stuff that comes on it.

More then likely the reason the wireless turns off is a setting in the profile system that Thinkpads have, they try to be intelligent about using the wireless, but sometimes it just gets in the way.

Everyone wants to hate on Dell, but the fact is they have the best support out of any of the major vendors. If you want to buy a cheap laptop you can get one from newegg or any other place. The problem is, you will get maybe 1 year of hardware support and I have had HORRIBLE luck with Asus on their motherboard support. (2 months to get a replacement motherboard)

If you want to spend about 700 bucks, you can get a Latitude E5430 with a 3 year hardware replacement warranty. Since you are student, you can also probably get a discount. But I would definitely get a latitude instead of an inspiron as they are business laptops that have higher quality components. I currently have about 6 latitudes that have been circulating our organization for about 6 years and have had very few problems. At work, I buy Dell because I know they work and the support is great.

I have made the mistake of trying to buy stuff cheaper and end up shooting myself in the foot because after a year or so I have a problem and have no support.

Yeah I've been looking into Lenovo/Dell - whatever I end up getting I'll just gut and throw Linux on it in any case, so all that pre-installed shit shouldn't be an issue. I've always loved Asus stuff though - I always hear horror stories about their customer service but I've never had any issues with them :/

    I don't, I'm a linux virgin :)
It's something I've always wanted to try and with my laptop dying/windows 8 looking super unappealing, now seems like a great time to check it out

Ubuntu is the easiest to get in to, and will have the most up to date drivers built in. I have always had good luck running it on Dell laptops.
