Hello my fellow forum dwelling denizens! As some of you may or may not know, I'm actually a music composer in my spare time. Mostly geared towards Video Game audio and the like. Today, I created and posted two tracks to my Soundcloud Account. I did this as a self challenge to create a full piece of music every month, maybe even more than that, but I'm starting small. Basically, the gist of it is, I'll be posting whatever song I was working on that month, no matter it's state of completion. I'm doing this to get rapid compositional skills, to expand my musical experience, and keep myself working within deadlines. So please, listen, comment, critique (I welcome it!) or just make silly comments as you folks are wont to do. I'll also be taking suggestions or images for future works, if anyone wants me to make a piece related to a bit of artwork or whatever.
First request: The Waltz of the Cephalopod. Good luck with the challenge. I'll give your work a listen whenever I can.
Imagery for Waltz of the Cephalopods: Dihm. I was thinking something whimsical yet powerful, but I can't really think of how to describe it past that. The feel of the song is there in my head, I just can't put it into words.
I picture a few movements. Something light and bouncing to start, for the cuttlefish. Builds up for the giant pus. They like to hide and ambush. They are awesome. Then you have the background theme come out in full and realize it has been there all along. The ominous threatening of the kraken, pulling ships and men to their doom. Gotta keep it watery, maybe get more so as you get deeper and bigger.
Get outta my brain! This is pretty close to what was in my head, so I'm a little bit afraid. Spoiler He's the Puppet Master!
When you post any pieces, please link directly to them. The link to your account merely bugs us to sign up to soundcloud, the horror! If you ever want to jam with my brother, check out falloutti at soundcloud. How long have you been doing music btw? Just curious. Looking forward to hearing your monthly pieces!
Oh, and I never answered your question. I've been composing for about 6 years, on and off. There was a year where I was only composing stuff in my head, as I had no recording equipement. Started in college have have tried to not stop since.
both tracks are very nice ! Bigup ! /edit: I followed the link on soundcloud to your older works . Dude thats some nice tunez!
They definitely sound videa gamey. I think Listen Easy might be a lost Linkin Park song. I still like it though. Compositions are very good and are just awaiting some better software/a band to make them feel more full. Nice work there Trev!
I really like the buildup in Listen Easy, how each new sound and instrument is slowly added in, very nice. Listen Easy was definitely my favorite of the two. Horns of Destiny was good, but nothing really stood out to me I think.
With your current skill, you should definitely continue! What do you have for equipment? Ableton, external keyboard etc? I've been listening to the latest two today and I think they're really quite something. Didn't yet dig into the older ones as I didn't realize there was more.
I've got Ableton, but I haven't looked at it much. Right now, because of bugetary constraints, I'm using a 2009 iMac, with Logic Pro 8 basic sound pack + Ableton sound pack, using a AKAI MPK-88 MIDI controller for input. Everything else is skill in Logic Pro 8 to make things sound like they are not MIDI.
New Track I know I've been quiet on this the last few months... unfortunately life had a fun time destroying my free time during the month of July and the beginning of August. I'll be looking at the ideas in this thread after Septembers song... which is going to focus on drums. As for background info on this song, the background grumbling noise is actually the straight recording of the radio waves from Voyager 1, during it's flyby of Saturn. So yes, that song is literally a part of space. Also, it wasn't entirely finished, I wanted to move on and not use too much of September on this piece. Enjoy!
Very nice ambient piece, I started listening to it, liked the start, then I was doing stuff and my attention sort of drifted away from the music but the ambience was a good mellow exploratory background to just typing away on my work stuff.
