looking to dive into the VR world finally, and curious what the best bang I can get for my buck is. Definitely want for the PC, though I'd like untethered, preferably simply due to cord issues. Not particularly interested in mobility/AR, but whatever I get is going to need to include the full package as I don't currently have anything for VR. Any suggestions?

There's some options for wireless... but they aren't exactly what you'd want for a good experience. I'd say the best bang for your buck right now would be the Valve Index system. They will eventually have a adapter card that would inable wireless VR experience. The only other headset I"m aware of that would allow that is the Rift S... but Oculus is going to require a Facebook account before long, and I fully intend on getting another headset because of this.

I mean, if it's the best I don't really care, I have a facebook account anyway for reasons, though if they start sharing what I'm doing on facebook I may have to murder them all in person.

Best headset it kind tough, you can't get everything in one still. I recommend checking out the MRTV youtube channel for information on VR headsets and controllers. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2mgZjuHRDW02mx_ok4wfPw

Best for large field of view is probably the Pimax 8k, but then you need to be able to push enough hp in the computer to render two separate 4K perspectives and then send it to the headset. For best clarity and visuals then the HP Reverb G2 which is about to ship the final production version in less than a month has the most clear images. For hand controllers then the latest Valve Index hand controllers are the way to go, thankfully you can use these controllers with other brand headsets so you aren't forced to get the actual Index headset.

Unless you absolutely have to have a wireless headset, you don't want to go there as you give up too much for it from what I've found.

What I can say is that you will either love VR and dive in deep, or it will be something to collect dust in your house. At this point, outside of Xbox with friends from college from time to time, and an attempt to play MW5 and SC, I exclusively play games in VR now. Seriously without VR I'm not likely to buy it anymore as I just don't play anything else.
