I told Mag I'd try my hand at making some interesting custom maps for us to use. Here's my first attempt, let me know what you guys think, and if you'd like to actually play on it and/or see me make more: Ver. 1.0. Weingarten Vinyards 28x28 (old)
first off, it is an amazing looking map and we will definitely play on it for the next drop. but... i really, really hate to rain on your parade, but in an effort to keep the map selection organized I need new maps to meet standard map size requirements. Should really be 32x34 for a medium sized map. This is going to be a lot of extra work, but maybe we can trade off converting it together. This may seem like a huge pain in teh ass, but it is the only reliable way to incorporate it into the random map generator (a limitation of the megamek game lobby).
Its a beuty. Got me thinking about this old thread http://mwomercs.com/forums/topic/62797-mwo-in-megamek-so-does-this-look-familiar/ What sizes to we have to play with (maybe we mostly play on medium) I could consider doing a map aswell sounds like a fun way to contribute.
sizes are multiples of the standard 16x17 battletech map. Small map = 16x17 (these are often combined with others to form larger maps) Medium map = 32x34 (the most common sized map we use) Large map = 48x51 (best option for more wide open maps, but also used for any kind of ambush missions where players are deployed to the center of the map) Generally, I do not recommend making maps larger than 48x51. You may also make "corridor maps" such as 32x51 or 48x34; these are ideal for infiltration, line defense, and retreat missions. All that said, if you want to recreate an MWO map using their original dimensions (like Forest Colony), that is one exception that I don't mind. Keep in mind, though, that any non-standard size map won't be able to be included in the random map generator (again, a limitation of megamek). As far as what type of map to make, check to see what maps we already have. If there is a type of terrain that you don't think we have a good selection for, that is where I would start. Off the top of my head, we have generic temperate countryside pretty well covered (although the wine country map is definitely a welcomed twist on that). We don't have very many desert, coastal, or swamp maps. Extreme condition maps are also still rather limited. Remember when getting the scale right that a Level 2 hill/object is as tall as your avergaed sized mech.
Hey guys, I'm moving into my new house today and tomorrow so I won't be available to play. Here's the .board file for my map; I hope it goes well! Weingarten Vinyards 32x34 Ver. 1.2. 32x34 .board
