I forgot that I had signed up to alpha/beta test the upcoming World of Warplanes (same guys as World of Tanks), and I just got the invite to try it out. Haven't installed it yet, anyone else trying this out?
Cool, I'll give it a try in the next few days and let you know how it is. Still in alpha so I'm expecting bugs.
I got into beta a few weeks back. The flight isn't realistic, so it quickly found its way off of my computer, lol. If you want my info, pm me and I'll look it up and toss it to you.
I figured it'd be a little arcady, they couldn't draw in a very large userbase with authentic flight. I played Il Sturmovik a little, the learning curve on real flights a little bit of a bitch. I believe my WOP username is ilves
Just my two cents: WW2 planes are awesome by ruling of the Awesome Laws and therefore the game has my interest by default. However, my knowledge of their business model for this new game is relatively limited. I'm assuming it will be something like WoT (which certain parts I don't really care for). If that is the case and since MWO will probably be out first (even if only in beta) I am probably going to pass in favor of more time with MWO. btw... loved Sturmovik 1946. I think i still have some custom co-op maps and missions buried somewhere if there is interest
Played a few sorties yesterday. Overall, not bad, definitely a little arcady and it devolves on the 1st tier into slow looping battles around each other until someone pops at you on a surprise dive. Planes take a fair amount of damage before going down. The bullets fly too fast, if you lead your target you tend to overshoot. My main complaint: You get target brackets that track all opponents nearby and the one you are locked onto. You can hold down left cntrl and the camera tracks your locked on target at all times. This totally eliminates all need for a pilot to have situational awareness. Worse, the targeting brackets appear when enemy planes are barely visible on the horizon, basically making it incredibly easy to spot an enemy and leaves stealth basically useless. The brackets appear at somewhere around 4-5 kilometers distance, gun range is about 500 meters.
Still Global Alpha (it's technically open, except one needs to send in an application and get it accepted)
