Use this thread to discuss our starting setup. It would be good if we can get some nice synergy with our mech loadouts at the start.

I'm still leaning towards the retro-tech Shadow Hawk. With only a AC/5 and medium laser, it is really going to suck starting out, but I am hoping to upgrade it heavily over the course of the campaign.

If i use rapid fire on my AC i can have it deal double the damage (~17 total damage per turn isn't terrible), but if it jams i will be stuck with my medium laser.

Therefore, my first upgrade will be at the start of the campaign. I have 1 TP leftover and I'm using it on a Basic Equipment Upgrade which will allow me to replace the primitive cockpit with a military grade one. This will free up SIX tons; enough for me to add a couple of medium lasers and more heatsinks. The next will be an armor upgrade from primitive to military grade (which will free up another FOUR tons), but I will be about 200-300K short from getting that starting out.

However, if someone with a little leftover would be kind enough to loan me the cbills (i will immediately pay you back asap), I can get my Shadow Hawk up to military standard right at the beginning :)

I'm planning on running heavy fire support in an Eisenfaust. its slow as fuck, but it packs a big wallop.

My Thorn is built around 2 MLAS and an LRM5. My hopes are to make this light mech a viable guerrilla tactics mech where it uses it's speed and versatility to use hit-n-run attacks to confuse the enemy while the bigger boys get in close to clean up. I'm curious to see just what I can do with this light mech and how much customization is possible with it's limited weight.

TL;DR - I'm Magnus, and I'm putting a bunch of medium lasers on a mech.

As someone who's not fully familiar with purchasing/modifying mechs, how exactly can I go about finding out what is and is not available for purchase to modify/improve my existing mech?

Hey, no ammo worries and selectable power/heat output is a godsend.... and i do have an AC/5 on there too. :p

    but yeah...

I know, I know... I'm terrible. To be fair, though, I'm nowhere near as ridiculous with them as i could be.

Also, no matter how much I try I can't seem to shake the apparently endless love i have for the ShaddyHack. If I can use one, I will.

(I blame the lack of it in MW games)

I've checked the sticky and the attached files, yet it doesn't really explain much. Like how do you know about the military grade cockpit and armor?

Magnus; I have 2 TP left over, you can have one for your upgrades.

The reason I ask is that I still have 4TP that could be used to toughen up my light mech and would like to see what sort of options I have and understand just what those options provide.

@ Taake: the SHD-1R is equipped with a primitive cockpit and armor... which makes it very inefficient. changing both to military grade is nothing more than equipping the SHD with something that most mechs already have (military grade = standard equipment). in RP terms, it could be seen as my SHD is a family heirloom and/or something i've hobbled together through various and possibly less than legal means (still working on my background).

some of the mechs in the list of starter mechs are considered "primitive" and some are not. you would have to be familiar with the background of them to know which are which. another way would be to load them up in the mechlab, which will show you exactly what is equipped. if you have something specific in mind, i might be able to help you beyond that. to my knowledge, the Thorn you picked is already equipped with all standard military hardware. my only reservation about the Thorn is the same as with all 20-25 ton mechs; their greatest asset is that they are cheap. There isn't much you can do in a 20 ton mech that you can't do better in a 30-35 ton mech. If your aim is to get into something bigger as quickly as possible, however, then starting under-tonned is probably the better route.

@sheo: thank you, sheo. i'm not very fast, but it looks like i will have more armor than most of us. chances are i will probably be on point most of the time. so yeah... i think it will help everyone. also, like i said, i can pay you back immediately as soon as i have the funds to do so and i like to keep the general policy that pilots with the lightest mechs get first dibs on salvage (within reason)... so yes, you would get preference over myself :)

We need to start talking about our basic strategy for our Lance. With my 1 TP left over and the 1 TP loaned by Sheo (thanks again, Sheo), I can more than double the crappy firepower of the SHD-1R. I've narrowed it down to three choices:

    (1 TP = Basic Equipment Upgrade & 1 TP = Armor Upgrade)
    [IMG][IMG][IMG]
The reason for the two tons of AC/5 ammo is because I'm hoping to spam rapid fire. I will be risking an auto jam, but i'm hoping to soften them up until my AC goes dry/jams and then clean up with shorter range stuff.

SHD-1R-2 = Everyone seems to have a hard-on for infernos; this is our best option if we need more of them (i figure at least two of us should carry some SRMs).
SHD-1R-2a = Best option if we are lacking enough long range firepower.
SHD-1R-2b = This version seems to be the least likely to suffer from ammo explosions or shortages. However, it suffers from lacking the anti-vehicle option of the first one and long range firepower of the second one.

I can't decide on which one I should take though until I know what the rest of us are taking... what do you guys think? What are you guys taking?

EDIT UPDATE: After some testing, I'm beginning to think that Gihzmo was right about 40 shots of AC being too much. That leaves me another ton to play with...

Alternatives after removal of 1 ton of AC5 ammo:
    SHD-1R-2 = remove both SRM2 racks; +1 SRM 4 AND +1 Heat Sink (better heat efficiency w/ x1 SRM4 vs. x2 SRM2s)
SHD-1R-2a = +1 ton of LRM ammo (better long range staying power)
SHD-1R-2b = +1 medium laser (better short range spike damage)

Finally, will likely move two of my RT mounted lasers to the CT to improve combat effectiveness.

My plan was to lay down the mid range firepower with the Eisenfaust's AC/10, but i'm slow as fuck, so something that can chill with me an supplement that firepower, as well as make sure my ass isn't showing, would be nice.

Taake and Fet, what are you guys taking? We should coordinate on our builds. We should be taking mechs that compliment eachother. Sheo has the firepower and decent range. What about the rest of you?

I have the Kyudo KY2-D-01, which is a 45 ton mech with 1 LL and 1 LRM-10 with movement of 4/6. However, if we're going to get a revised list of mechs to use then that will be changing.

    other things to consider:

the missions available to us are dictated by our slowest mech. if we want access to recon and raid missions, we need the speed to do them; 6/9 (or 5/8/5) will get us access to all missions. 5/8 (or 4/6/4) will get us access to most. if we go with 4/6 (or 3/5/3) we will be limited to non-raiding/recon missions. if our slowest mech is 3/5 (or 2/3/2), we will be limited to mostly defensive missions and heavy assault missions.

also, keep in mind we can always trade personnel between lances. before we do that, we need to decide what Claymore lance is going to be. are we focusing on firepower? are we focusing on speed?... or perhaps somewhere in between? what do you guys think?

I'm in a Talos (so I guess I could also take inferno SRMs if mission calls for it and they are available). And I believe the speed is almost the same as the Eisenfaust. 4/6 I think it is. Already changed the tech level to standard in the mech lab. And I think I have 1 TP leftover but not sure what to do with it. Except for the thorn I think 3 of the mechs are 4 or 5 walking speed.

    Eisenfaust is 3/5
Both the Talos and Shadowhawk are 4/6 but hawk has JJ while Talos does not

No idea what the Thorns speed is.
