the project has escalated to shopping for myself as well (on my dime, naturally).

any noticeable difference in the GTX 9 series? I was going to go with a 6 series for him, but for only a little more, the 9 series is well within reach. Then I would take the 9 and give him my old 6 (which is more than sufficient for his needs).

Should I grab the 4GB memory one, or do you think 2GB is sufficient? (w/ Star Citizen in mind)

    Suggestions?

Star Citizen will be a resource hog, go with more if you have a choice on basically everything.

On a side note, the new Microsoft surface 3 is a full functioning computer OS in tablet format with a decent amount of horsepower. Might be too small for older people but you can drive keyboards and monitors off of it.

  5. I'm very happy with my GTX970. I'm not going 4K resolution, streaming or running triple monitors, but with a Core i5 I get 60fps on pretty much anything at max or close to max settings. Star Citizen is a little more iffy but it's still not optimized at this point either. I get more like 45 at high settings on Arena Commander.

Yeah, but is that a 970 with 2 or 4GB of memory on it (should be one of the two)? I'm leaning towards the 4GB, but it makes the 960 considerably more expensive than getting one with 2GB (I looked for a 970, but I didn't see any in the ~$200 range).

  7. 4gb on mine. I don't know much about the 960 series but I imagine they're a good alternative for a little less money.

Yeah, I was looking at raw stats. It's a matter of inches so to speak. I think just having a 9 series instead of my old 6 will go a long way in having me ready for Star Citizen. To be honest, the GTX 660 I have runs SC pretty well already, but I figure since I'm already putting my GP's pc together... might as well upgrade some of my stuff too. :)

EDIT: just found out the 960 w/ 4GB memory I found has an additional $20 rebate. That puts it at only $220. I don't think I will find a better deal than that.

  13. Is the processor for his computer or yours? For you I wouldn't go with any less than an i5-2500k.
