So my motherboard has a PCI-e card slot, but it's not the right VERSION to be able to handle the new video card I bought. Sad bunny, is SAD

Should still work IIRC, just won't be quite as fast.

Yuh. I run my 780 in a PCIe 2.0 slot. Next upgrade is going to be MoBo and CPU.

Then I need help findin out what one beep, and 3 short beeps is, because I've tried with only one power plug connected

That was the first thing I could find, may not be applicable to your HP though.

970 requires both power plugs to operate, it requires lots of powers. XD

well, yes I know it takes both, I just tried it, to see what it would do, with one, it flashed the bios screen, then turned off, with two, the bios screen turns on, but only beeps (one long, 3 shirt) then nothing, doesn't turn off or anything, just stays as it is.
all the beep codes say it's a CPU issue? which is odd.

Sounds like it might still be a power issue. What psu do you have?

    it's a Thermaltake, 600w tr2

Hmm...? The psu may not be producing enough juice.

  14. 600W should definitely be enough for the 970, it's a pretty low draw card.

According to the 970gtx spec page, it requires a minimum of 500W. A gold rated 600W psu would likely be peaking around 80%, which yields only 480W. Then you must accommodate for any cpu demands.

  16. I'm running 550W with mine and no issues.

  17. Fluffy have you tried taking the 970 back out and running the computer with the onboard graphics or your old card?

That is very possible. All psu aren't built equally. Not to mention a gpu will often have inflated wattage minimums.

I always build my computers with a PSU with about 30% more power then the total combined draw. You have the calculate based on total draw of all the stuff you put in side. yes your 550 might be able to handle it but not if you put a few more HDD's, fans, etc. You may have killed the PSU, or not enough power.

    Edit.

It's much better to have a PSU running at 65 to 70% cap all the time then 90 to 95% cap. It extends longevity of the unit, less heat, better consistent power, and upgradable later on for more stuff.

Also had a friend run his around 95% cap all the time, and ended up completely frying the unit and damage the mobo.

even with low wattage it should still power up, basic systems don't push the GPU to full power draw, or the rest of the computer for that matter, if the PS isn't big enough to hack it it'll simply crash your PC when the PC asks for more power than it can provide (learned that the hard way) most modern PS have automatic interrupts in order to prevent the PS from exceeding it's threshold, otherwise it would continue to struggle until it literally burned itself up.
