Maybe but they weren't especially good characters. I'll take underdeveloped Rey over... god almost all of them. Even the ones that were already established were used so hamfistedly they might's well have been someone else.
In her defence, I don't think the canon films have ever established which force abilities were easy and which were hard. And storm troopers are basically brainwashed to follow orders anyway.
I think the only one that is supposed to be difficult (for the average jedi) is the mind trick. Which i think everyone we have seen in the movies is gifted, not average jedi. Obi-wan and qui-gon are some of the better jedi in the order. Yoda was grand master for who knows how long (and i think the most powerful one to that point). Anakin and luke are both beyond average. We actually don't even know if rey is strong with how horribly untrained kylo ren is. Heck with the skill kylo ren showed in episode 7 a youngling from the prequels could probably defeat him in a pure swordamanship battle.
My head canon is that his lack of skill is why she picked that up so fast. He accidentally gave her the knowledge of how to do it when he tried to read her mind. And Fin seems to have no force ability at all and was able to hold him off for several minutes. So yeah, Ren sucks.
if they ever do an old republic era movie they will need to find some kickass wire-fu guys in some hong kong back ally to pull off shit warring jedi do
Not related to the movie but apparently according to some poll Kylo Ren is more hated than Jar Jar. Morning Consult asked 2,200 adults for their impression on various Star Wars characters. Leia Organa unsurprisingly topped the list with a 73% favorability rating, followed by Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, Yoda (72%), and R2-D2 at (71%). The first villain is technically Anakin Skywalker (55%), followed by Darth Vader (49%). While the first character from the new trilogy is Finn (39%), the rest starts to get weirder and more cynical. As it stands, Rey (38%) is only one freaking point above Jar Jar Binks (37%). I guess jar jar is 5% higher then ren. So according to that poll none of the new characters are that well liked. that is a really weird order. I'm questioning the people involved in this poll.
especially with Boba Fett being so far down the list popularity wise, I mean sure he's not a hero, but if he's not that popular then his fan base is ludicrously vocal Edit: They also completely forgot General Grievous and Darth Maul
If she turns out to be some kind of cloned force-using super soldier, that will make a lot of the bullshit stunts she pulled off in the previous movie make way more sense. Will still need to explain how she ended up as a scrapper on a desert planet, but it's pretty much the only explanation I would accept at this point. What do you mean by "good" characters? You mean she is more likable? I'll definitely give you that (especially compared to young Anakin and Jar Jar). JJ is good at banter in his movies (an easy trick to make characters more likable) and his Star Wars movie is another example. However, it doesn't do anything to explain how the hell Rey took 10 levels in badassery before ever seeing a lightsaber nevermind holding one. While she's very likable, I don't think her portrayal is very believable (based on what we know). She's a study in the rule of cool taken one step too far (but that's JJ's modus operandi with almost all of his movies). Between her OP issues, the Super-Duper-Deathstar mk III, and the rather boring way Solo died, I had trouble really enjoying the movie.
Probably same way x-23 got out of the lab. Her creator/mother got her out of the lab. Or some similar scenario probably when Rey was young thus why she doesn't really remember. I'm assuming it was probably the first order who made her (if Disney went the clone route). Also would why Kyle ren thinks she feels familiar. He trained with Luke and if she is a clone of luke i would think her presence in the force would be similar if not the same. On another note, I'm not entirely certain but when I watched ep 7 again later it actually looked like Han was turning the lightsaber emitter toward him while ben/ren was trying keep it turned away.
I as well. Wife and I had a night out planned with some other people, it cancelled due to various reasons, but since we already had a sitter I just swapped it for Star Wars tickets. Golden.
