If it has VR support, I'll probably even but it from Epic.

Hopefully more simulator than FPS. Early on PGI said they were doing hotas but it's PGI. So I'll believe when I see it.

I've been so longing for a mech game focused around power tripping, simmy and laced with coop option.

Hope they get it right with this one. If not, at least we're having some competition too so maybe one of them gets it right. And competition also often means that you got to do some amount of diversification to stand out so it won't be about who has the biggest art budget :D

Some day maybe we'll be able to shoot at a target looking through a mirror rendered in real time and watch the light from the plasma bolt annihilate the shadows until rendering visibility null from the blast and the sudden loss of a bright source of light. Until that day I'll be happy for pretty fictions rendered outside of a game engine XD

Oh, mirrors are ridiculously easy to make.

You just place a new camera that renders to texture. If you know what you're doing you'll calculate the screen resolution and estimate the size of the mirror on screen and scale the texture so that it is as small as possible without loss of resolution at the distance.

The problem is that you're still rendering the same scene twice per frame, the larger the mirror on screen the worse the issue. Now, if you have more than one mirrors on the scene, that will cause problems especially if it is possible to view one through the other.

I mean, I placed a second renderer merely to have optical zoom in VR, the Oculus code in Unity wouldn't let me zoom the main view because they're afraid that some dev would cause nausea with it and they're very sensitive about the nausea reputation. Anyway, I had to place a second camera on the scene and render in front of the main VR cameras but now I had to place the surface sufficient distance away to prevent ridiculous discomfort from the surface being too close.

Then, running it in editor with RTX2080 with a very small crosshair size zoom surface I would get a drop in the framerate that was visible lagging the refresh rate. Had to throw down the resolution of the surface down to 128x128 or so, even then I fear that it will just be too much for many computers and they might have to deal with either no zoom or a pixelated 64x64 version or so; kinda like digital zoom option.

Additional real-time renderers are very expensive.

    ------

Now, to make the bolt emit lighting to the surrounding, that's easy, you just have to use any one of a number of ways to place a point light source to it, tell the surface to be regarded as light source and so on.

Making a camera that acts like a mirror is ridiculously easy. Making that same camera address all angles of view and reflected light sources from it's own perspective not the viewers, and building it in such a way as to not break your computer with the amount of data it has to parse all at once in a realtime simulation is a bit more difficult XD. Remember I wasn't referring to the light as a separate thing, this is all being viewed through the mirror which means you're rendering the light and shadows simultaneously from two different perspectives.

None of these things are impossible, many of them aren't very difficult even, given appropriate hardware. But doing all of them at the same time under a real time circumstance would be a hard chew for most computers today if any could manage it. And that's just rendering the scene, not even performing any of the other calculations and operations that would undoubtedly be going on during gameplay.

    But maybe someday... XD

I forgot about the lighting propagation through the mirror from all the light sources - you'd need to use a special material that essentially redirected all of the raytracing for all the light sources that can reach it.

As for the multiple perspectives, for each client there is usually only one camera set that you need to reflect with the second camera. Up until the mirrors see each other and all hell breaks loose :D

One day when rendering a camera view for both eyes will be a trivial task enough to have multiple camera sets in the scene without impact on performance :D

Apparently the preorder beta access was pushed back from November 5th to November 26th. Something about "we don't think we can maintain hype for 5 weeks so this will help people stream/no NDA". At an SCA thing so can't really look.

Sounds to me more like a the game won't be ready. Again.

I have a shit ton of bad experiences from bosses trying to stick to schedules too rigorously.

And some of it is not in the fact that you'd try to stick to a schedule but that something more deep is wrong and that is causing you to be unable to pretty much make it to any deadline.

On the other hand as any deadline is approaching something critical always breaks down because you have not spilled enough bits to the bitgod and he is angry.

Also it sounds like Russ is counting on Modders to actually finish the game. I guess in the latest AMA there was something along the lines of "... well there's the modders... hopefully they can bring the game into greatness".

That's okay, by the time it climbs out from under the Epic shithouse it'll probably be reasonably modded for playability and enjoyment.

I find it funny how he's like "well there are the modders" but they went with Epic. Who has no modding support. And I assume the extra steps of having to get mod tools (i assume it is usually easy on steam) will probably curtail modding just people don't want to have to deal with that extra step/steps. Basically won't be as much modding as there would be while it is only on EGS.

I think Epic is 4 or 5 months behind on adding the mod support.

This is where Epic is as of Oct 11.

trello board of their roadmap (a little wierd to get around).

Just because there is technically no modding support, doesn't mean you can't make your game moddable. HBS has always officially stated they do not support modding for Battletech at this time, but that doesn't mean it is hard to do. It is quite easy, actually because many of the files are simple text documents that are easy to read and understand.

It is also possible that they could enable mod/Steam workshop support after it gets released on Steam a year later.

No guarantees, of course, but something to keep in mind.

So part of Russ' reasoning for going with Epic games was "we won't have to compete as much there as on steam" or something like that. Yeah but now they have to compete with Pheonix Point (dec 5th). Phoenix Point broke 2 million. Before getting any money from epic.

I think $2 million was the most MW 5 could have gotten if every single preorder the $100 one. Also I think far more people are interested in the tactical shooter strategy.

I just hope that taking Epic's money (and all the drama from that) makes it worth it in the end. Would hate to see MW5 release and be a huge disappointment. On the bright side, any annoying bugs at release should be ironed out by the time it hits Steam.

Apparently people are getting worried since it is about a month till release but there are no new videos (I assume gameplay videos). Just images/stills.
