I haven't been keeping up on gaming news lately so the 'borg's Other Games forum is my go-to one-stop spot for it. I'm shocked no one has made a thread for Civilization: Beyond Earth yet. Having never played Alpha Centauri but heard and read many good things about it over the years, I'm excited to see how its successor, Beyond Earth, will turn out.
I am not sure.. everything I have seen about it so far.. it looks like Civ 5 on another planet with a different set of goals. The structure for winning and developing is different. But it does not have the broad tactical map of something like GalCiv, as far as I know. I could be wrong though.
Alpha Centauri is praised for good reasons. It's brilliant game and only Civ game that I've actually loved. You can get it from GOG.COM nowadays. Comes with the expansion too. I'll be keeping eye on Beyond Earth for sure.
I'm still not 100% sure what sets Beyond Earth apart from the other civ games. But sure, I'm a big Sid Meier's fan, will probably be consumed by this as well.
I didn't realize Firaxis had a small showing at E3 this year. Polygon has a good interview with the lead designer and lead producer that reiterates some previously announced information but also reveals some new details. There is also new gameplay that starts here with most new information following, notably indigenous life behavior, stations, and planet arrival staging.
I think the biggest differences are also the tech tree is not linear, but a web that allows you to pick a path. I think thats a big improvement in that you can progress in different directions and have to make choices. But again, keeping an eye but its too early to make a call.
Loved Alpha Centauri, Civ3, and Civ5... I'm skeptical that this will feel much like the original, but even if it's just Civ5 in spaaaaaaace it'll be fun for 50+ hours. What could possibly go wrong!?
I saw that, and immediatly, thought, "Wait... we weren't at that one. How did he...?" Then I remembered youtube exist.
Disregarding the technical inaccuracies that bug me, Firaxis really knows how to make some great cinematics: I've been following Beyond Earth's development through r/Civilization: Beyond Earth and watching the weekly developer livestreams over the past few months. I'm quite pleased by the many additions and improvements Firaxis has made to the game in comparison to Civilization V, so I'm excited for Beyond Earth's release next week. Thought some fellow 'borg members might appreciate a reminder of--or introduction to--Beyond Earth before its release.
Bought a copy for me and one for the wife. We are going to spend the weekend it releases playing. Both of us are huge Civ fans.
