-IF- it turns out that Epic is abusing the Unreal engine somehow to force developers into using Epic, then it is not the developers fault for being played (other than not apparently reading the fine print) it is the company that is (in this circumstance) apparently abusing underhanded business techniques in order to push their own agenda regardless of the consequences to their clients. Unreal is supposed to be a fairly excellent engine, it'd be a shame if the developers of the engine are suddenly making everyone that uses it accept the Epic exclusive somehow, it'd suck to have to avoid anything made on the engine out of principle :p

Let's not get too far down the rabbit hole on conspiracy theories here folks. Sometimes the simple answers are the correct ones

It's better than people spiraling out on "I think I read" and "Chinese company!!1" and "spoiw4rez!". All of which may in the end be true but let's not trade of rumor and speculation of we can't back it up

I'm on board, I'm keeping my persimmons close to my chest anyhow, no need to go dropping my fruit over unknown adventures until I know how Epic they'll be :p

Hmmm. Shenmue 3 and borderlands 3 are epic exclusives and unreal engine engine. Not every exclusive is on unreal. But I wonder how many are on unreal. Not so much epic "forcing" unreal developers to sign but epic really emphasizing the no royalties.

I wonder how long the royalty free period is for, has anyone heard if it is just the first year that it is exclusive or does it run past that?

    This is from unreals website

Aside from that it sounds like even after the exclusive they don't pay royalty on the epic games store sales. But they would on their steam sales. I haven't actually seen anything.

It really is hard to argue going the Epic Game Store route if you're using Unreal anyway. That's a whole lot more money in your pocket.

A whole lot more of nothing is still nothing, Epic has pissed off an Epic TON of players simply because of how they choose to do business. Personally I hope they choke on it and die, but this may also mean a good number of games that might have been worthy will likely also fail because of this shit. *shrug* I guess only time and statistics will tell whether we're building an Epic Fail, or just another garbage company we can't get rid of.

I think we are part of a microcosm. I don't think the average gamer gives much of a shit, tbh. Most gamers don't read game news, aren't up on the latest hardware, aren't tuned in to the gossip, don't watch tech YouTubers, etc. Do publishers/developers risk losing a fraction of the audience by going Epic? Sure. But they also stand to gain. Cost/benefit

At the very least I think it will reduce kickstarters. It will definitely have an effect on preorders.

How does audience reach for the Epic store compare to Steam? Or GoG?

I'd question if, as sort of a Venn diagram, video game users who have eschewed Epic's storefront/launcher service aren't the majority with their userbase being a microcosm.

And with that said, I think creating exclusivity for a well-known IP with a rabid/loyal fanbase is potentially a big win for Epic. I don't think it's particularly a win for MW5's sales during preorder and launch.

Mechwarrior may be a rabid fanbase, but we're generally an OLDER group of rabid fans, which means typically that when you piss us off, we're liable to make sure everyone and everything hears about it :p Not saying they won't get players to play, just that the experience is liable to be soured by a bunch of grumpier old men.

It's my impression this is basically what it came down to. They needed to spend more time to get the game ready and more time = more money. It was easier to take the money from Epic and ask for forgiveness later than to ask the "fanbase" to pony up more cash. I seriously cannot imagine how the fans would be any less pissed by the latter scenario. I still don't like the way they handled it, but if I remove my own feelings from the situation, from a business sense I can sort of understand it.

At this point it's strictly a business transaction for me. If they deliver what we wanted on Steam (or GoG), then and only then will I buy it... but any faith or goodwill I had for PGI as a company is gone.

I'm starting to wonder if Phoenix Point actually got more money from Epic than MW 5 did. I think PP made more off it's kickstarter and preorders ( a kickstarter on fig and preorders directly from them on their website).

Yeah I think PP broke 2 million before the Epic exclusive. And Epic probably paid them that same amount.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.ga...ing-breaks-usd2-million-heres-how-it-was-done

So yeah. If PGI only got the same amount from Epic that they got from preorders (somewhere between 1 and 1.6 million most likely. I think max was 2.4 million and only if every single order was the $120 level. But most likely 80-90% of the preorders are the $50) then Epic is also saying "your game is shit".

Some interesting new information I found.

I don't like playing devil's advocate, because it usually implies the "other side" has some merit. No, sometimes the other side is just fucking wrong. That being said, I do try to be fair and to be fair, I think some of the MWO community (no one here specifically) is being very melodramatic about this:

Sure, if you don't give a shit about MWO, it doesn't really help, but I've noticed recently there's a lot of people who are taking this handout and still bitching that PGI owes them something (again, not attacking anyone here). Yeah, I'm mad that they went to Epic and I don't really care about getting stuff for MWO these days, but people are getting their refund and some free shit to boot.

Could you imagine acting like this in any other circumstance? That's like not liking your meal at a restaurant, the manager comp's your meal so you pay nothing, and then you want to bitch to everyone in earshot about what a shitty restaurant it is. Sometimes I feel there is some truth to the accusation that the gaming community as a whole is full of fucking crybabies.

Sorry, just ranting at this point.

I think both things can be true at the same time. PGI sucks and also the community is a bunch of douchenozzles.

I think there's more incentive for the community to suck when wild hysterics and mass boycotts/refunds are the threshold of behavior developers and publishers respond to.
