Shogun 2 on 3 monitors is pretty sick. FYI.

Liked this game as soon as it was announced.

Loved this game when I downloaded and played the demo.
Fall of the Samurai (coming out in March IIRC) seems pretty sweet as well.

I'm not sure if my laptop can handle the full game however (I was stuck with using the lowest graphic settings in the demo and I'm not sure if that was just the demo or the laptop/game saying "yeah, you're gonna want to stick with these settings, buddy").
    Also, money.

From NOW until Friday May 1, Total War Shogun 2 will be free to download and keep.
The DLC will also be on sale at 75% off!

Even if conquering Japan in the single-player campaign (highly recommend btw) isn't for you, I can also recommend multiplayer battle shenanigans (especially with the imo pretty excellent Avatar Conquest mode which has not been added to any other total war game for some goddamn reason)

Agreed. Back closer to release, I used to play the Avatar Conquest competitively with a friend. Untrained Fugu Cook was the best kept secret at the time and we exploited it to great effect. We went so far as to name our Steam Group after them.

Funny, I have been occasionally playing Shogun 2's highly unbalanced Fall of the Samurai expansion just because it's so ridiculous, almost like Total War: Casual.

Couple of completely batshit crazy unbalanced things:

Kihetai for Choshu, just get the Firing Range going and they'll get
    - 150 man line infantry unit
    - early game unit
    - quite good at melee and standard full sized unit, they don't suck at melee
    - ridiculously high accuracy
    - very fast rate of fire
    >>> Murderous fire up until 125 meters.
-- get one of those provinces that can build the provincial speciality Gunsmith: Satsuma, Bizen, etc.
    -- research Kneeling fire
    >>> Double the rate of fire, get the accuracy over 93 for 0 experience, completely breaks the game

Just remember to deploy them only two ranks deep so everyone fires. While they have low ammunition they hardly ever have to use all that much.
They can literally just walk up to firing range of a castle with elite infantry on the wall, deploy to kneel fire and just slaughter the defending infantry firing from cover.

I've seen them cause so many casualties when firing at multiple units on multiple sections of the wall that the whole castle just surrenders.

Tosa Riflemen for Tosa, they're quite similar with these differences
    - 90 man unit, 40% less oomph
    - 150 range instead of 125
    - 4x the ammunition
    - slightly less accurate
    - light infantry move faster, recover very rapidly
    - suck at melee and have 40% less men so they get wiped out fast

Of the two, Kihetai you get early in the game and never have to replace with another type of infantry. Whether you change sides or declare yourself a republic, your Kihetai divisions will remain completely unaffected. Same for Tosa Riflemen but they're just far less versatile unit, more ammunition doesn't make up for how much they suck at melee. Also in tests they can get trashed by Kihetai that rush in with their superior numbers.

But the real gods of the battlefield are artillery. Lots of modern artillery.

Namely, Armstrong Guns trained at a province with Gunsmith and Firing Range.
    - 68 accuracy without any experience
    - very fast reload rate
    >>> Absolute carnage over longe range

A typical army I use has the general, 9 companies of Kihetai and 10 batteries of Armstrong Guns. And it's completely broken!

For Vanilla Shogun 2 it's much the same. Get lots of archers, get their accuracy as high as possible and you'll be seeing a whole formation's every last archer hit their moving mark with every arrow every time, castles become absolute death traps for defenders because now the walls are just stopping them from charging the archers.

    Edit:
Don't get me wrong. I love the game, I've poured 360 hours to it, it's my second most played game right after Factorio with it's 676 hours.

As you can tell, I don't get to play much these days. But if I do, it's usually a quick battle or two of Shogun 2.

Apparently Creative Assembly has gotten to the point of such utter corruption they are now kneecapping their own games' success because they hate their fanbase.

Stop buying their newer shinier games that they keep pumping out with fewer and fewer mechanics and quality control.

Not to worry, I haven't bought any games for some time now and EA is not on top of my list anyway.

Instead I am looking at a comeback to games at some point. I'm just not the best guy for industrial C++ though my employers might want to keep me anyway because even though I'm not the best at it they have a huge RnD dept. and even a guy who can just wing it and fill his spot is better than dumping all of that work on the remainder of the team. The company has a shit ton of legacy in both old obsolete code, architecture and old machine setups that need to be supported and it is slowly eating up their RnD capacity.

But video games and actual new prototypes, as in old style games where you get the game and then later maybe an expansion, that's my cup of tea. Core games, not casual bullshit. Though on Sim side the DCS style is not bad either, though the prices are.
