Probably not, I really just don't want to be replacing it for a long time.

I spent a portion of my morning explaining to a coworker why two titan x's SLI'd together was a waste of money. He doesn't even game that much, just wants a super computer. Does do 3d modeling, but even that's overkill.

If you are going to splurge, get the ti. a standard 980 cannot handle 4k gaming, not at higher settings. If you are even thinking about getting a 4k or Gsync 144hz monitor, I would get the 980TI.

The TI is about 30% faster for 30% more money. So you are really not paying a premium for the performance. That of course depends on the game, it could be as small as a 15% difference.

I think if you are going to stick with a 1080P monitor at 60hz, the 980 would be perfectly fine. If you want to do 4k gaming, then get the TI.

The AMD cards are not going to be what everyone wants them to be. Also, nVidia is not going to drop their prices for the AMD cards.

The story was released to day that the new card is not as fast as the TI, they are still of course tweaking it.. but even if it is, it is going to be more expensive (supposedly 849) have a water cooled block STOCK, and require a 700W power supply. I have been an AMD fanboy for a long time... but they are loosing, badly. I think AMD needs to focus on workstation cards like the FireGL and focus on raw processing. That is what they are good at. They just don't have the stability or performance in games that nVidia has.

Wait, are you talking about the current series of cards they are making more stuff for which amd already said they would still make a few more. or the new series that will be using HBM and should be 20nm which should be out 4q this year.

They don't say which 290x they are using are they? Most likely one of the older ones with only 4 gigs.

hmmm... now the problem of finding someone who has ti's in stock...

As for 4k monitors. It won't be soon. It may not / probably won't be till next yer. But, I'm looking at the long term. I'd like a card to last me a good 3-5 years.

An article about a card that is using un optimized drivers is slower? not surprising. They are using a totally different method then before so things are going to be a little rough at the start.

This is all a moot point really because it all depends on the game and what manufacturer they optimize the game for. Its just most of the time its NVidia, on the few games the AMD cards are optimized for the NVidia cards fair far worse then the vice versa.

I speak from experience. I had 2 7950s that are technically faster than my GTX 970. However I had conastant crashes and driver failures, blue screens, restarts, hard locks. All of them could be attributed to the video cards. I had similar issues with my 5850. Since switching, the only time I had driver crashes was when I over clocked the card to much.

No, AMD cards are not where they were once. They are no where near as stable and the are ultra power hungry. My 2 7950s drew about 700w by themselves. The article may be off, but I do not think we are going to see AMD come out with some wondrous card that blows everything out the windows.

Honestly, I hate the fact that I am support nVidia. I have hated nVidia for a long time, but the simple fact is, they make a better video card for gaming. For workstation CAD/CAM and graphic design workstation stuff, I think AMD's cards are much better.

    Never liked SLI or crossfire.

    What I know currently.

PowerColor has come out and stated they are the fastest currently.
HBM is supposed to increase bandwidth by ~%50
much lower energy consumption because the dies are stacked and consume less power since it has much less resistance in the system.

its all a waiting game right now.

    so pick your poison
