For those who are interested in flying helicopters in Arma, the Art of Flight series by Dslyecxi is a great resource.
(Through tears of laughter) Oh man.. The 'landing' section of the final assault-transport. Those 'bloopers'. And hanging his head in shame.
So, is it at all possible to fly a chopper with a mouse/keyboard in the new flight model? I have a joystick, but it's kinda shitty, and I don't have much cash on hand. My other option is to map my Xbox controller to flight, which could be possible, as I've down that last time I was playing a bunch.
Use the standard flight model with a mouse and keyboard. For basic transport flying, there is very little you cannot do with standard mode. And with practice you can do some combat flying with it.
Haki has me beat these days, I'm really rusty after a couple of months off. Hopefully I can get back to speed with the new flight model soon.
So wait. Can you set the flight model used in settings, and have that be completely separate from the server? I also can relate better to a controller setup than flying with mouse/keyboard, but I'll give both a shot.
The flight model can be set independently for each user in their options. I believe that it can be a hard set in the server/mission options but we don't do this on anything we run so you shouldn't worry about the advanced model unless you want to really work on it. Shack Tactical made the decision to only use the basic model because of the increased training and proficiency necessary on the part of their pilots to safely utilize it. One slight error on the part of a single pilot could well mean that 20 guys wouldn't get to participate at all in a mission since they generally don't have respawns in their missions. You can also change some of the individual settings as well in the options, such as hard landings. While most people will have no problems landing normally with practice, all it takes is one small hiccup in netcode and you could warp at the last second and throw away tons of effort. This is the reason I'm a fan of allowing for hard landings. In our group I use the advanced model 90%+ of the time but it does affect how much risk I am willing to take in a flight. It also changes the behavior of the helicopters, for me they feel much more nimble and more accurate with the advanced model but then you risk over stressing the airframes.
Ah okay. I'll take a look sometime this weekend then, and maybe fiddle around with flying mouse/keyboard and Xbox controller. Basic model sounds like what I should take, as I have a tendency when flying in any game to push whatever it is I'm in to and past any limits there may be.
I just really like flying, and so I don't think you guys will suffer overmuch if you have another capable pilot.
Well, to be honest, the times when we get an opportunity to personally fly are rare. Most of the time we have AI pilots :disapprovalor use mud-based vehicles.
this, I'd like it, but I don't like it Most of my flying is just practicing in the editor testing different things, I think Haki has flown the only mission (singular) I've been on that we didn't have an IA pilot in the last couple of months.
I've flown one gunship mission with an AI gunner, and maybe 7 or 8 transport missions total. Helicopters are VERY fragile. Putting one on the ground after getting damaged without killing everyone is actually kind of a vital skill (I can do it maybe half the time, at best)
