at least without firing a shot from your ship, if I remember correctly even after crippling an enemy ship, unless there was a catastrophic engine failure (causing it to be lost to the warp) you still had whole cities worth of troops to deal with. Presuming of course that you're intent on capture or salvage, otherwise you can just leave them derelict and the Tyranids will inevitably eat the survivors. (purge the space hulk!)
In the board game generally what happens is a ship is "hulked" which is just badly damaged and unable to continuethe fight or move at all... most of the secure and interior of the ship has lost air and though their is some pockets and holds but generally its uuninhabitable but still salvageable. There are worse ways for the ships to go as well... my favorite is a warp drive failure... which basically rips open the warp and sucks in anything nearby.
To my mind one of the worst things that can happen is a Gellar Field failure while in warp transit. Just a single second could result in utter catastrophe in terms of crew losses. It's like playing Russian Roulette with a 6 shooter, of which two chambers are loaded with old and unstable ammunition. One day, just one day somethings going to go very wrong. And there's so very little you can do maintenance wise to prevent it, as you are just waiting for Milennia old components to fail as they inevitably will.
I'd probably compare it more to playing russian roulette in a leaky old tub surrounded by sharks, every time you jump, you pull the trigger, but even if you survive that, inevitably the boat's going to sink, or a shark's going to overturn you.
Well I got my pre-order...apparently they could release beta as early as mid February depending on what happens...
Apparently its 10% off on Steam today... not buying it until I see it in action but if anyone's interested
