I ended up purchasing the Logitech G29 earlier today. Now i just have to wait for the delivery then i can get started
DiRT Rally is leaving early access V1.0 was released today alongside the winter wonderland update. Which delivers a new rally set in the snow and ice of the Varmland region of Sweden to the game. These snow-filled stages are known for their snow banks and we’ve been hard at work on new soft edge tech that simulates the density of snow. The update also brings two new cars to the game, the Hyundai Rally and the Volkswagen Polo Rally.
So I had some Ps4 account credit and I picked this up, figured since I don't have a wheel using a controller is still better than keyboard. Pretty much ran like 10 total races so far, did the 60s championship with the high HP front wheel drive, down about 4 tracks on that. I did the 3rd one without running off the course and got 2nd, everyother time I was like 8th due to flying off. I wish the tutorials were a bit more interactive, simply hearing about technique doesn't necessarily help. I'm getting the feel for shifting the weight around on turns, but hairpins still throw me off and would be great if I had some better practice at that.
Did a daily on the Sweden map, going from a 60s car to a modern rally car threw me off a bit, but I managed to finish! Sweden and snowbanks are a bitch, you don't crash out but clip that bank on a narrow road and you do like two 360s.
What!? I like the 70s RWDs the best. That Fiat is my jam. The Fiat and Opel are the most driveable, the Escort can be a bit more difficult, and the Lancia is a bitch until you spend a lot of time with it and learn the balance with the mid engine.
I also found the guides on the Steam community page hub pretty helpful http://steamcommunity.com/app/310560/guides/
Ha yea I had cash so I went straight for the Lancia, I guess that was my mistake. That thing oversteers like a mofo at the slightest touch. I'm actually pretty good with the 60s Lancia Fulvia HF, I'm getting some good flow on maps, hairpin turns still screw me up, I can't tell when to start turning, when to apply handbrake if at all, etc. Managed to get 2nd on a few legs during my first 'event' that I just finished. I ended up 6th in the event because I DQ'ed on one of the first races I did after flying off a cliff (not advised).
RWD is probably harder with a controller because you need to be able to apply partial throttle much more often than with FWD or 4WD. Getting turned in, light on the throttle through the turn then gradually increasing coming out is a lot easier with a wheel/pedal setup.
My first and only ride so far on the Lancia, I couldn't even keep a straight line on the road let alone turn it. EDIT: Following some of the Steam basic tuning guides helped a little, I can finish a course now.
