Hrm.... I'd recommend that you try and watch Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Failing that, Avatar: The Last Airbender(Still sorta anime, just not made in Japan) Sometimes they are very childish, but others? Extremely adult, and really tug at the heart strings. If you do decide just to see why the fuck we like this stuff, give anything you watch at least 4 episodes.
I thought the last scene in 2001 was already the last scene in 2001 crossed with bath salts. IMO something like Monster would be better for someone who doesn't care for the Japan-isms in anime. It's a normal thriller that just happens to be animated.

Well i think you are missing out.. like one of this seasons anime called Keijo!.. in which woman play a sport called keijo which is played on a floating piece of land in a pool and they try to knock each other off into the water without using hands or feet... which means they have to use there butts and boobs... NSFW!! Spoiler only in japan could stuff like this ever be imagined. but seriously 95% of anime is crap and weird as hell because it caters to a specific niche and never truly wanders outside of it.
Ahhh. Disappearing to go binge watch it all. There is another called Yuri on Ice, ice skating anime with two guys named Yuri and they are both gay for each other.. Yuri is also the named genre of manga that involves girls that are sexually involved with each other, lesbian manga basically.
