They had a system in Skies of Arcadia that was pretty interesting, it was turn based and you had to put in your orders for each turn based on how you thought the enemy ship would react. Basically let you strategically position your ship to fire the mainline cannon if you got it right, but you still had to put the heat on with the broadside etc...
