Question about a missing thread

    There was a thread started, by me, in the NSFW area of the forums. It was an active thread until recently when it just disappeared. I'd like to ask if it was accidentally moved or removed, and if not accidental, why. I posted it in a section of the forums that was deemed acceptable for that sort of topic and from what I can tell through the discussions there were never any personal attacks against anyone and the flow of the discussion was civil.

    I'm just wondering if these rules are still in effect for the Taboo section:

    I do not believe that at any time anyone in there had personally attacked anyone else. I also do not believe that the discussion was being dragged into other sections of the forums. I'm merely seeking an understanding as to why there are other posts in there that have been maintained and left opened yet that specific one in question has been locked and hidden.

    I have to admit that I share Taake's confusion. I'm not mad about this, but it seems like the taboo part of the forum is the place for controversy, and the conversation was emotional, but civil.

    I sent a PM to Dihm just wondering what the official word was, before I saw this thread.

    I'd like to suggest that in the future if a thread is too problematic or divisive, that it be dealt with in a more direct and transparent fashion.

    I think locking the thread and giving a brief explanation would go a long way towards preventing future problems and avoiding any bafflement or frustration. If it had been a thread that I started, I'd want to know what had happened, too.

    So, you'll have to get Chris' reasons from him for making it disappear instead of just locking/leaving it alone, but let me comment from my perspective.

    Yes, the "rules" for the Taboo section are fully in effect. You enter at your own peril, and nothing from there should influence your actions toward a fellow member outside of that section. When we have members throwing out the word "hatred" and "anger" as it relates to fellow members, we need to start being concerned. We don't want that spilling over. And we don't want escalation. I think there was a fear that that was where the thread would head to next.

    We are certainly open to feedback, and are always looking to improve how we do our moderation of the forums. The main goal is to keep this community intact and functioning well. To me, that comes first. The Taboo section creates a grey area for us moderators when it comes to this goal. What we have seen so far leads us to believe that we have an incredibly mature, thoughtful, and respectful group here. BUT, sometimes we are still overly cautious and will react a bit more extremely than necessary to ensure that we don't have to throw out temp bans and things of that nature. We don't want division within our own ranks.

    If all parties involved (Chris included) want the thread returned, it can be. Though with increased supervision by the moderators. If people step out of line they'll get some time off the forums to cool down.

    I think Mezz has summed up nicely what I was trying to convey. I don't have much issue with a thread getting locked if there is ample notice from a moderator explaining the reasons why. But to have something removed, not locked, but removed without any reason or notice leads one to believe that the rules put in place for specific sections of the forums do not always apply to particular individuals and that they have the ability to have discussions removed that aren't appealing to them or suit their specific perspectives.

    I'm only looking for transparency and clarification, nothing more. And I've sent a PM to the appropriate person.

    Yeah, I wasn't sure if that thread was going to be going anywhere really bad. It could've, but in my opinion that seem averted by this point. Also, that was one of the most mature and reasonable discussions I've seen anywhere on the Internet in regards to that sensitive topic. So kudos.
