Fantasy was always going to translate better to a total war game. That said it might me a neat idea for another game.
I am excited to see what the total war guys can do with this. They also have to combat with the History grognards and now they can handle with the Warhammer Neckbeards. I wonder which will be harder to manage. (I am in the history category myself.) I used to be big in their forums back in previous games but have pulled back from pre game interest recently.
I think after the initial Grognard outcry from the History guys dies down (which it will as always) they will come to like what they are seeing. A lot of people hated how Shogun basically went super arcady and colorful when they first revealed it, only to find out they actually enjoyed the fast paced battles, and later the dynamics of sword vs musketry in Fall of the Samurai. Give it time, if anyone can pull off a Fantasy Grand strategy like this its Creative Assembly, and from what I have seen so far they have probably been working on this game for longer then we realize
given that each race sounds like its basically playing a different game, I am cutting them some serious slack for the initial release.
Yeah. I was abit sad first when they announced that they were only doing Empire, dwarfs, greenskin and vampire for the first game. What they will be able to do from it is to flesh them out properly. Each faction is very different from the others and have different goals.
Well if Shogun 2 showed us anything, you can have a great game with only 1 faction. So I am not worried about number of factions but how they do them. I am hopeful about this. Rome 2 was a pretty bad release but from all accounts Attila was better at release, with the most major issue just being performance. At least the core game worked. Lets hope they can keep that trend up. Worst case I will buy it, wait 6 months, then play it after it patches.
CHAOS CONSUMES EVERYTHING!! I don't actually know much about Fantasy Warhammer factions, it just seemed like a good chance to use that pic.
Creative assembly has jumped on the bandwagon that a lot of Triple A strategy and even smaller strategy games have gone towards, which is to release a solid central games with a handful of factions available, and then market DLC faction packs after that.... if your curious as to what I am talking about, see their DLC pages for Attila and Rome. Attila is the best, and most current example of this. Basically the game released with about 5 fully fleshed out factions and a day one pre-order faction (The Viking forefathers pack) which was a fleshed out set of minor factions playable in the game. They then released the "Longbeards" pack which was Germanic tribes, and later the Celtic packs (Brittany and Great Britain factions). After all of those were fleshed out (the DLC's all updated in game factions even if you didn't own them) they released a Expansion campaign which was basically a new way to play the game. My bet is that the initial release will revolve around the four factions included but with all of the other factions making some sort of appearance though not fully fleshed out and ready to be played (ie Skaven having tons of slave armies but no big uns and so forth) As the game progresses they will release faction packs later paired to campaigns with these factions. At least this is what I hope they do as it will allow the re-playability of the game to go through the roof and net them enough cash to keep going. I also hope they keep the pricing system they have implemented in Attila... which is the base game is only $45 ($37.99 for pre-orders) and the subsequent addons are priced $7.99 for factions and $14.99 for map/campaigns. Combines the best of both worlds, a large game that can be played on it's own with options to expand to other factions/gameplay elements if you enjoy them. but we shall see.
