They are used to attack bombers from bellow. The german word for those guns is "Schräge Musik", its called "jazz music" in english. I read in a developer diary that they are going to add more planes with it but the system to handle them is not in the game yet.

Apparently as many as about 1/3 of the german nighfighters used those weapons.

Yep, and they were deadly. It was the introduction of those night fighters that caused a reduction in night-time bombing raids by allied forces... at least until they had a counter fighter...

That was the patch a few weeks ago. Basic summary:

Corsairs, much better. Incredible climb and dive abilities, however, going above 500kph will make your turning nigh impossible. You can outdive everyone, and dive easily on enemies, but if they move an inch to the left you'll overshoot. At high altitudes though they're good dogfighters and have very good disengage and flee ability; so far no one has kept up with me in a dive.

Hellcat, screwed. Climb rate is messed up.

Wildcat is pretty nice now, although it was before as well.

Can't say if airacobras were really changed that much, but currently my favorite plane is the Kingcobra... decent turn, decent climb/dive (although not the masters by any means) and a 37 mm cannon to take out bombers. I've been playing historical with this one and racking 2-3 kills a game on average.

Have they fixed the bombers yet. Last time I flew every engagement ended in pilot unconscious. Game breaking for a bomber pilot.

And what the hell is my co-pilot doing?

Will come back once they sort the balance again.

hellcat sucks now. wildcat seems more sluggish but maybe i just haven't gotten it going fast enough yet.

just noticed something under modifications for the US B bombers (A20 doesn't have it) is it new that they have a splintervest? or did I just never notice it? no other nation has it. And I didn't see it in any patch notes.

that's what I thought. It sounds like it adds armor to the crew so they don't fall unconscious/die quite as easily. Not sure if it actually works though.

I went through and checked all mine and the only one I have so far that has the option of it as a level 7 is the B-25j-1
Bombers that don't have it: A-20, all PBY's, dauntless, TBF, and the A-26

Probably because those are light bombers/heavy fighters/dive bombers rather than true 'bombers'

have the upgraded wildcat engines (though I'm at 8-9 now for US so thunderbolt replaced wildcat. p-63 will replace helccat only reason im keeping hellcat till i can replace is the bombs and rockets.)

the 2 25's all 3 17's and the 24 have the jacket modification. I think by the end there are supposed to be 6 b-25 variants available. J both the G and H (75mm cannon ones) the one that the doolittle raid used can't remember actual version and I think it is the E or whichever one it was that had a bottom turret. missing one still.

    told you so Manco :p

on edit: I think its the fluidness of the flying that is so nice in that game. It isnt one of these two axis (least it doesnt feel like) flight games in a 3d space. If you want to preform a lazy roll dropping your nose onto a target then flash past and corkscrew up a mountain side...feel free.
