Battletech (PC Strategy Game)

I can see how it works for a horror game like Alien: Isolation, you have an investment of time between save points that you lose if you screw up and the sequences themselves are somewhat difficult and all of this creates the right kind of nervous and cautious atmosphere where you're forced to avoid risk by penalizing you if you don't.

But for a lot of games it's just stupid and shows how limited data structures they have. Essentially, there's nothing going on in the game world and the only thing to save are things like "area N: cleared y/n, stash #12 looted y/n, player health, player ammo 1, player ammo 2". Sometimes there's a justification such as the game being simple but most of the time having predefined check points / save points is a sign of severe consolitis and should be treated with cleansing fire.

 

i have run into strategy games where you can only save between missions but not during a mission. you can usually pause but that doesn't help when you need to sleep and for people like me my PC is in my bedroom and I turn the computer off at night both because the lights can be bright and because it just adds heat to the room.

 

Yup, all the same issues. The desktop is like a jet engine, there's a reason I wear headphones that eliminate almost all external sound.

 

but you start the mission at like 10 o clock have no idea how long it might take then all of a sudden it's 2 in the morning AND YOU CAN't fucking save so you can turn the computer off.

 

are you sure thats not actually the government having jets do a quick flyover of your house taking pictures?

 

Well, if they were I couldn't tell it apart from the noise from the desktop unit.

A short interview with some interesting ideas, really trying to push the storyline/company aspect of a mercenary unit bouncing between contracts and just trying to survive at the end of the 3rd Succession war.
