Great to know Sheogoraath. Side note, do they have really slow update servers? It's a 5.something GB download, but most of the time I can't get a speed much above 200kps. Most software updates load at 400-600kps or better on my connection. This is taking fucking forever.

    Update:
NVM, I didn't realize steam was updating itself at the same time. That's where all my bandwidth was going. Back up into the 400kps range with War Thunder now.

Just noticed the name of the studio that made the game, Gaijin. seems a little odd that they would use a word that could be interpreted as a racial slur.

Aren't the devs Russian? It seems to be suffering from the same problem as World of Tanks did for a long time: the makers are Russian and have an entirely too high opinion of Russian equipment. Or at least that was the impression I got from a handful of matches last night and talking to people about what country to fly on chat.

i think the complaints about superiority of russian stuff in this game are inflated. Every faction has different strengths at different tiers. in some of the higher tiers germans dominate with the FW 190, in tiers 6-8 the american P39 is a monster, for example.

People always find an excuse for why they don't do well.

I'm flying with the Luftwaffe and I'm getting absolutely murdered. It takes me forever to down another plane ( even the biplanes) and I get strafe killed with seconds. Fyi, I'm flying the first fighter in the german tier.

Well it's good to know that later tiers have different balance. I don't want to go through WoT again where the devs took about a year to finally admit how OP some of the Russian equipment was (tier 5 KV with a 152mm that could one shot a tier 7 Panther, for instance). I'm still at level 0 or 1 where it's all biplanes, and the I-15 series are both faster and have a better turn radius than everything else in the British or German trees.

Anyone else have some low level planes they want to level up? I want to work my way through the Spitfire and Hurricane lines, get a FW190, and then a P-38. That way I'll have at least one of pretty much every major play style (fast turning dogfighter, high speed interceptor, and energy/dive boom and zoom). I'm guessing that it will take awhile to get through all that, but it should go better with a squadron working together. I know I was having a hell of a time until I joined up with Naga and Stymir last night.

I was having better luck with the British than the Germans. My vague impression is that the German biplanes have MGs with a very low rate of fire, which makes aiming the tracer stream harder. The British have slightly faster guns, and again the USSR gets a much higher rate of fire. I upgraded one of the British biplanes to the Gloster Gladiator. Having 4 MGs instead of 2 makes a huge difference. Naga's doing German planes, and he loves the level 1 Falco (technically an Italian plane but in the German tech tree) because it has 2x0.50 cal which is more fire weight than most low levels can muster.

Having the same feeling. All was fun in game when everyone was in reserve planes, but now I don't manage to do shit before getting shot down.

The leveling system is strange and I haven't had time to read through the FAQs... so you train up crews on specific skills, and you can switch crews between planes for a cost, and they retain their skills? Are there also plane specific skills? Slightly confused

i'm mostly flying Brits, and I have some german stuff. The Hurricanes and light bombers are fantastic, as is the first Beaufighter and the Spitfires. for germans, I'm having better luck in early tiers going with italian fighters, until the FW 190 and BF 109s show up.

for anyone struggling, get to tier 4-5 and you will be much happier. a lot of the various factions really suffer at the lowest tiers due to poor selection of plans; they are either way too sluggish or waaay undergunned. Russian bi-planes are the only ones that don't really suffer in the 0-1 tiers. However, the odds are much more even once you start unlocking Bf 109s, Spitfires, and their contemporaries.

My VERY general assessment of the various factions:

United States (likes lots of machine guns, best heavy bombers, not recommended for new players due to poor selection in early tiers)
    • mediocre selection of planes (will likely get more in future patches)
    • overall favors speed over turning ability (with some notable exceptions)
    • the P40 (t4) and Buffalo (t2) are great planes, but otherwise you are very limited in choices of fighters at lower tiers (4 and under)
    • preference for use of machine guns over cannons... with some notable exceptions (more consistent dps, less time spent reloading)
    • overall strongest heavy bombers (good balance of durability, firepower, and speed)
    • few but well armed medium bombers
    • decent selection of torpedo bombers and dive bombers
    • only one jet plane (so far): the Sabre... but it is arguably one of the best ones (best turn rate + 2nd best top speed).
    • strongest tiers overall: 6-11
[*]very poor fighter selection after tier 13, very strong bombers in tiers 13-16

Germany (overall most well-rounded of any faction... for now)
    • HUGE selection of planes
    • solid mix of speed and turning ability (depending on tier)
    • best selection of HEAVY fighters
    • has the only jet bomber in the game (very fast, but poor bomb payload)
    • no heavy bombers!
    • good selection of medium bombers
    • overall best dive bombers (Stuka, obviously)
    • decent selection of torpedo bombers
    • mediocre jets (inferior to US and Russian jets)
    • overall good selection
      [*]strongest tiers overall: 4-14

Russia (a biplane lover and ground attacker's best option, good option for new players at low tiers)
    • good selection of planes
    • solid mix of speed and turning ability (depending on tier)
    • decent selection of fighters, but definitely more of a focus on ground attacks than other factions (might get more fighters later)
[*]best biplanes in the game, no contest (only good in low tiers). this is why new players may feel that Russians are OP starting out.
    • great selection of heavy bombers, but none of them are very good (poorly armed, poor bomb payload, slow, etc.)
    • best selection of "attacker" ground support planes in the game: IL-2 line obviously (similar role to the modern A-10)
    • very poor selection for torpedo bombers (can only get one by spending real $$$... and it SUCKS)
    • good selection of jet fighters (3)
    • has fastest jet in the game: the MiG 15
    • strongest at lower tiers (0-5) and higher tiers (11-20)
[*]VERY bomber heavy faction at tiers 11-12

United Kingdom (likes cannons, very good and consistent performance at most tiers, good option for new players)
    • good selection of planes
    • best Allied "turn fighters" with heavy reliance on cannons (great damage in bursts, but lots of time spent reloading)
    • single engine planes tend to be very slow but very maneuverable
    • twin engine planes less maneuverable, but VERY fast (generally speaking)
    • good selection of heavy fighters (all twin engine)
    • poor selection of heavy bombers (only one @ tier 16)
    • best selection of torpedo bombers
    • best selection of jet fighters in game (5), but very mediocre overall (roughly on par with Germany)
    • strongest in tiers 3-11, with a few more good planes in higher tiers beyond that

Japan (still needs a lot of work)
    • poor selection of planes (likely to change in future patches)
    • historically best "turn fighters" of any faction (untested)
    • historically most fragile planes of any faction (untested)
    • overall good fighter performance, but suffers from poor selection
    • very fast conventional heavy bombers, but poor selection and poorly armed (especially compared to US bombers)
    • great medium bomber selection at tier 7
    • decent selection of torpedo bombers
    • worst selection of jet fighters (only one at tier 17)
    • generally poor selection at any tier, but tier 11-12 is best option for fighters and tier 7 is best for bombers

NOTE: Higher tiers does NOT mean more "fun". Often times, the mid to lower level tiers (tier 11 and below) will be the most fun for you as they tend to have a much greater number of players and the tier of planes you encounter will tend to be more consistent with your own level.

I've been doing Russian and British, mostly bombers for the Russians but I also just got the LaGG-3 which is a very fun fighter to play. Also just got a PE-2 which I'm trying to learn an anti-bomber role with.

Yea I started with US, bad move as there is only one tier 1 plane and one tier 2 plane. So sitting at Tier 2, you have to fly a tier 0,1, and 2 plane to fill out your three crews, or I guess I could do historical battle and not care.

    The Buffalo isn't bad though.

I guess I'm going to pick up some Russian biplanes to grind out low level credits. The IL2 might be fun too, I've always liked doing ground attack strafing runs.
