Watchin’ more Black Clover. Don’t turn into a giant robot. Don’t turn into a giant robot. Oh thank god. ... Oh god damn it!
I compared it to Naruto before but having caught up to the simulcast it’s a lot more like Seven Deadly Sins—rule of cool trumps basically everything. No deep plot but if you just wanna watch overpowered dudes kick the crap outta each other it’s got that in spades.
Watchin’ Attack on Titan. Who the heck’s styling the Titans’ hair? Is there a fifty foot barber chair out in the woods somewhere?
I still occasional the final few episodes of G gundam to see if I can spot all the cameos in the final battle. Also G gundam is where the wing gundam and tallgeese first appear on screen (gundam wing was in developement while g gundam aired. And wing allowed G to put those two suits in the final battle (against the dark gundam in space). RX-78-2, GP01/FB, GP02 and zeta are in. I'm fairly certain the Mk 2 is in. I think a few of the zeon suits are in. I'm sure there are others.
For someone who generally hates most anime, ID: Invaded is surprisingly competent in my opinion. No spoilers, but dude basically enters the "id" of the minds of serial killers to stop them from killing more people. Trippy surreal shit ensues. The show gets bonus points in my book for a few reasons: no insufferable personalities the English dub is actually pretty good the title actually makes sense (in context) less kuwaii shit; asians that actually kind of look asian. Kind of reminds me of an anime take on "The Cell". Was trying to find a dubbed trailer, but couldn't so here's the first episode instead:
A lot of anime is adolescent power fantasy, but when you consider the popularity of action movies that’s not terribly surprising. The trick to enjoying anime is to look for stuff you’d enjoy in any other medium. It’s above all just a way of telling a story.
You are right. I actually really do love some anime out there, its just hard for me to find new entries in the sea of loli bait and titty giggling out there. I think it stems from my desire to watch stuff i can recommend to my friends or family; the majority of which are not into the weeb shit (not that I really mind if someone is).
I've found if does have that it needs to be over the top crazy in other areas (action, comedy whatever). If it is ecchi for the sake of being ecchi I won't be interested. Also why is there a ton of Isekai stuff coming out (that's the teleported to another world genre. Sometimes a reincarnation thing going on too.)
Watchin’ the Netflix reboot of Evangelion. Not sure why this got so much hate. It was always a confounding and kinda pretentious show, and this version doesn’t seem especially different from the 90’s one.
Agreed. I think its an issue of outrage from the "purists" out there who overestimate its importance to the genre.
I suspect folks are remembering the experience of watching Evangelion rather than the actual show itself. When it hit the States anime was known for things like Sailor Moon and Speed Racer. Classics to be sure, but Evangelion brought a way heavier tone. Plus it really hammered on the dorky adolescent male demographic. It's not hard to see why it was so beloved, but nonetheless it was always pretty far up its own ass. Anybody watching it expecting it to be some iconic representation of anime is gonna be disappointed. Anybody watching it remembering what it was like in that super awkward time between being kid and being a teenager, or just watching it because giant robot fights are cool, they're in for a good time.
If I remember right, even the creator mentioned once he didn't have any great hidden meaning in it, he just pulled a bunch of random Christian terminology to write it.
I could never get into it. Probably because by the time I did try watching it I was in college and felt like it was trying to push something. Or being to pretentious.
To be fair, I suppose the greatest achievement of Evangeleon was doing something eye-catching and different. Sure, it was an incoherent mess of a story, but man... what a weird, wild ride. Not something I'm in a hurry to watch again, but glad it exists.
