Anyone ever played it? If you haven't, its a fairly old game that's huge, fun, and not to mention one of the most accurate space combat sims I have ever seen. I only bring it up because of the mention of quadmechs. The "turret view" in Freelancer would be a perfect way to do some quadmech weapons and rear mounted weapons on regularmechs.
Yes I when I played I loved Freelancer and wish I still had it. In fact I almost bought it... or maybe the second one when I heard that someone made a Firefly mod for it xD but ya awesome game.
Oh hellz yeah! I loved that game! Sadly, I only had a cracked copy via .ISO, and it's still on my old laptop that crapped out....
Have that and the sequel, those are solid games and the best thing to come out for space sims since Privateer! I also have Descent Freespace on my hard drive but haven't gotten into that one yet. I'm a space sim fan from the original Wing Commander days, fond memories.
Have any of you tried EVE? From what I have read about in the Freelancer wiki it seems that they are similiar except that EVE is far larger and does not have a single player option.
I also love EVE, a no shit tough mmo but the downside is the skill gain being time based but if I were to sub to any mmo right now it would be EVE.
I've tried EVE, and it really isn't that close. Sure, concept is similar, but execution is vastly different. In Freelancer, you have a minimal HUD, and a simplistic economy, at least in the first one. I haven't played the second Freelancer. Also, EVE is a point and click sorta thing for attacking, where you are actually actively piloting your ship in Freelancer, using the keyboard and mouse, or joystick.
Descent Freespace (and Freespace 2) are two of my favorite space sim games... graphics that still hold up pretty well -and a totally kick-ass storyline. I had looked into reinstalling Freespace and downloading some of the mods out there - there are quite a few really good ones, but I couldn't get my head around how to do it without crashing the game. Man, I've tried playing EVE - the graphics were always totally incredible, but I just couldn't get into it... never exactly sure why.
I like the how the economy works in EVE (bascially it is almost completely player driven). Attacking can be run with more than just a point and click if you want (you can bookmark location both in the instance and out of the instance to jump around and even break pursuit) but you can't use a joystick. As for HUD, are you talking about your visual range or an actual Heads Up Display that shows you the weapons/items you can use?
EVE can be a pain in the ass to learn and like most games (and especially in EVE) it is always better to run with other people. Also you really need a firm idea of what you want to do miner/industrial/pirate ect. I can understand not getting into it though, it can drag and training in real time can suck.
It's an actually HUD. As opposed to the massive amount of reading needed to play EVE. The HUD in Freelancer looks like this
Well, lets compare! Freelancer EVE Online Now, I know you can customize your HUD to however you want it. But seeing this first time starting EVE? Kinda intimating, I would say
Freespace 1 and 2 are my top two space fighter sims ever. I've played all the wing commanders, privateers etc, which are all great, but Freespace manages to create an atmosphere of that there is an alien species who will kill you, all you're doing is slowing it down and delaying the inevitable. I'd highly recommend anyone who hasn't tried it to play them, they're available on www.gog.com for fairly cheap and they ARE AWESOME. plus there a crap load of mods for them and custom campaigns.
ahh Freelancer, how I miss thee. More complex than Tacyon, but sadly no Bruce Campbell voice track, and more simple than the X series. Did any of you guys play the mmo Solurus Systems Mod for Freelancer? I used to rock a bulk cargo carrier on it back in the day
Most of the windows in the EVE screen do not need to be open and ya I could never get into EVE til I started with some people who had played for awhile/before and could help explain things to me. Also a little help financially can go a long way. Edit: Chat window doesn't need to be kept max, you could remove unneeded information from the objects menu and minimize the drone command window if you are good enough at watching them (For combat I ran a drone boat) Also minimizing the chat box and keeping private conversations in tabs helps.
First, that EVE screen is overwhelming and not one you would find if you started for the first time. This screen has been customized to suit the needs of the player. Can the Freelancer screen be customized? Is there an image that shows the multiplayer HUD aspect of Freelance? The things you would find if you were playing for the first time would be the chat box in the lower left hand side (but with fewer tabs, everyone of those tabs were custom adds by the player), the items at the bottom of the screen (action icons, shield/armor/hull strength, capacitor charge and speed), weapons/items added to the ship (you can link weapons and remove from view any icons that do not require activations which this player has elected not to do), the upper right side box is your target selected plus info, below that is the different objects (in this case active enemy and destroyed enemy) and below that your drones.
Oh yeah, creating an atmosphere of impending doom like they did is no mean feat... reminds me in some ways of Babylon 5 in that respect. Freespace 2, especially, just grabbed me and wouldn't let go. I thought the re-introduction of the Shivans was the best thing I'd ever seen... well, until the first time we see (or don't see) the Reapers in Firefly. Damn good stuff... and talk about going out with a bang! 'What are the Shivans doing with the Capella star.... OH MY GOD!!!' Yeah, I think I just sat there in utter shock when the final cutscene played for a good five minutes with my mouth hanging open.
