In regards to the southpaw: If it is prudent, we could combine our designs into the redesign of the Grasshopper GHR-5M/6M. My originals were actually very good (no ammo dependencies for one), but the weapon placement was all wrong (PPC mounted on wrong side). I'm hoping to make them more canon-friendly.

It is absolutely terrible. The fact that it was mass-produced in the thousands only makes it more absurd. The Reunification War would bring a heavy logistical toll even on the mighty Star League. It would have made more sense for the SLDF to utilize everything they had to the best of their ability. Applying a relatively simple and cheap refit using updated technologies would have helped the old Banshee A LOT. The BNC-3Eb leaves many of the traits of the original intact while amplifying the mech's firepower to an acceptable degree. Keeping with the "refit" theme, I chose only upgrades that were cheap and easy to implement; Ferro-Fibrous Armor and Double Heat Sinks. The Ac/5 was dropped for another PPC and the rest of the spare tonnage was devoted to a solid medium laser battery and better armor. The lack of weapons in the arms was purposeful. As this mech is far heavier than most mechs in its same speed profile, amplifying the Banshee's melee performance was an obvious choice. Armor in the arms was only slightly improve, but the legs are now much more well protected. Anything short of another well armored assault mech had best avoid melee with this brawler. Even with all these upgrades in place, the Banshee is still little more than an up-armored Warhammer. If given the choice, buying a Thug would be a better and cheaper option. The only thing that makes it cost efficient from a lore perspective is that the SLDF already had thousands (5000 according to Sarna) of them lying around. However, at least now there is a cheap refit alternative that can be used effectively in a combat role.

It trades the less heat efficient PPC for a Large Laser and the machine guns for non-ammo dependent weaponry. While this decreases max weapon range by 1/6, the armor has been almost doubled and the addition of a medium laser greatly makes up for it. The 3D also still retains its anti-infantry role with the inclusion of a flamer. Overall, this is a very plausible and basic refit of the original while still retaining its original traits.

Given its time of introduction, the 3E could easily be seen as an "early model" introduction of the canon CDA-3F that came out a few years later. The 3F is still arguably the superior scout of the two (well.. much faster anyway), but the 3E is much more cost effective. Also worthy of note, the 3F could be seen as the design that brings the "Cicada with a big gun" full circle because it returns the Cicada to a PPC-centric armament of the original CDA-3C.

oh don't be raining on my parade now. many of these have been in the pack since day one. for campaign purposes, these mechs are NOT available as "starter mechs", only as "refits". did you notice how none are listed as Introductory Tech/Tech 1 (our limitation for starter mechs in every campaign)? they are essentially no different than any one of the custom jobs you guys have done on your own mechs. in other words, nothing will change in terms of what we have been used to. remember that infamous Dragon that you will now never forget? that was a good fight, right? this guy made it. also, one of my primary goals was ensuring they are ALL lore friendly while also giving more options (the Banshee is a good example). i am simply sharing the best of my designs with all of you rather than keeping them to myself. you are welcome and no, they aren't all energy weapons heavy even if the list here may indicate as much... these are just the designs that are under revision. also, these are not nearly as min/maxed as I could have made them (again, was aiming for plausible and easy refits). most don't use any of the more expensive upgrades; NONE listed here use XL engines and very few use endo steel... so poop on you, sirs.

Compounding the issue was the fact that XL engines were often damaged or destroyed and very costly to replace. However, this was anticipated and so a year later, the RFL-5N was finally introduced with one very important improvement: the utilization of Endo Steel. To further reduce weight, one double heat sink was also removed (deemed "unnecessary"). These changes allow the 5N double ammo capacity and overall superior armor protection. The changes made are almost impossible to notice from the outside. In fact, so often are the two models confused that the 5N has gained a reputation as a "widowmaker"; many, many pilots have died from underestimating this lethal mech. The 5N still retains many of the inherent flaws of the Rifleman chassis, but it takes the original Rifleman design to its maximum potential. Unfortunately, it is still an exceedingly expensive mech. While never produced in large numbers, the model still enjoys a steady stream of buyers among those who can afford it.
