Didn't see a thread for this but the creator of the original xcom is the head of it. Some are calling this the true successor of xcom. Also the 1st backer build is out APRIL 30. With a full release sometime Q4 2018.

    A mutating alien threat.
The Pandoravirus can mutate living forms, and it can incorporate DNA from multiple species and clone them rapidly. You will face an alien threat that mutates and evolves new forms in response to your tactics. Our procedural generation system for the aliens can generate a huge variety of challenges and surprises for you on the battlefield.

    Intricate and challenging boss battles.
You will also face intense boss fights against large monsters. Monsters may have multiple abilities for attack, defence, generating mist and spawning larvae. You will need to use body-part targeting to progressively disable their abilities. (Yep body part targeting. And limbs can be lost)

A vast array of weapons and equipment.
There is a large variety of weapons and equipment based on various technologies - some old, some new, and some quite alien. Each human faction has their own tech which you can acquire through trade or conflict. Through your own research you will be able to combine and develop unique technologies.

Also sounds like nearly everything will be destructible. Also it is xcom with a bit of fallout feel. And some factions made me think of star craft. You also fight other human factions. Not just the aliens.

Yea keeping an eye on this although my backlog is getting cray... since my computer broke (now repaired) I've still got Kingdom Come, about to have Battletech and Pillars II, I started playing Bloodborne while my computer was down and I'm like 75% of the way through that. Glancing at God of War, maybe.

I like this style of gameplay, so I'll probably pick it up, but I don't think I'll be backing it as I've got to many blades in the forge as it were already.

At least this you already know it is a go. So It's not all making you want to back in semi-fear it won't become a game.

I did back at the $50 level (lowest to get in the backer build). Cheapest just for the game (so preorder final product, no backer build.) Is $30.

I like how they say ammunition will be limited so no infinite ammo (even if had to be reloaded) like in xcom. The infinite ammo thing made me not mind taking the low chance shots. With a limited ammo count players will actually have to think about taking the shot. And items can be traded between squad members.

    From pc games

The first indication of this mutation is the chunky, Aliens-like troop carrier positioned at the very start of the demonstration mission. I’m unable to use it here, but Gollop promises I can get behind the wheel in the final game. “Vehicles give you alternative ways for deploying troops,” he explains. “You can load up your squad, the vehicle will move very quickly across the battlefield, and safely deploy troops into cover. Some vehicles are armed, and some of them can be used to ram terrain and clear a way through areas.”

That last point links into another new element Phoenix Point introduces: completely destructible cover. Everything you see can be reduced to rubble, be that by a vehicle smashing into it, or one of the game’s colossal creatures tearing it down. “It poses a challenge to players in the fact that you cannot entirely rely on cover because it might not be there,” Gollop laughs. “At the same time, you have to use the cover to hide from some of the ranged combat enemies that you'll face. So it's a question of balance, deciding where you can reliably stay for a short period of time.”

This makes combat much less comfortable than that seen in XCOM. The sentiment applies to much more than reliable cover, though. Your weapons fire projectiles with more maths underpinning them. For example, a 67% chance to hit doesn’t apply to the whole shot, but to each of the individual bullets fired in a burst. Small adjustments like these make the Phoenix Point experience feel much more on a knife point than XCOM’s; there are so many variables that could see you toppling into failure, but so much scope for inventive tactics and enhanced soldier development

What [the aliens] do is a trial and error system,” Gollop explains. “So if they find a particular mutation is not performing well in battle because you've learnt how to deal with it, they'll mutate it and try to come up with something different. And if a mutation starts performing well they will deploy more of them. It does mean that if you do try different strategies and tactics from one game to another you will inevitably face different kinds of opponents.”

If you’d like to strike back at the Pandoravirus with their own tactics, you will have the opportunity to experiment with mutation yourself, provided you forge an alliance with Phoenix Point’s weirdest faction.

“[The Disciples of Anu] are an extreme religious cult who believe that an alien god is coming to rescue humanity,” Gollop explains. “They have religious rituals that involve mutation. They can control the mutations, so they're constantly trying to mutate humans into better soldiers or better human beings as their main objective.”

“You will be able to gain access to it, and you can use it on your own soldiers,” he adds. “You can also recruit some of their soldiers and they will have various mutations, including the Mutock Handlers. These guys have telepathic control of special mutant creatures.”

I like the fact that the action points are not used up 'per turn' like XCOM. If I still have movement points left after I shoot, I can still move, or move more after moving, so you can creep up, fire a shot, and run back into cover all in one turn. XCOM felt artifically restrained in that way in comparison.

Yeah. Xcom also started feeling really repetitive mission to mission as well. So I'm hoping this has not just more types of missions but also more random. Not like 5 assault missions in a row. The web page does mention 7 missions types at a minimum.

When you said 4+ squads, that means the starting lineup is 4?
Four is the lower limit for deploying a squad, not a starting limit. Squad Sizes can be as high as 16, depending on the transport available and the type of mission. A more limiting factor on squad size would be the scarcity of recruits and ongoing injuries (or mental traumas) of soldiers.

what is in backer build one.

The Backer Build will be the demo from the recent shows along with some additional procedural maps. It will just be tactical missions. No strategic layer, no campaign at this stage. We will keep updating it and adding more.

    and

We're fine with streaming. We just ask that you make it clear that you're playing an "in-development" build.

BACKER BUILD ONE: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
    Release Window
With the Backer Build almost ready for release we'd like to offer you some additional information and answer some frequently asked questions.

Firstly, we would once again like to apologise for the 24 hours delay in the release of the Backer Build. We had originally planned for the build to release at midnight PST on April 30th. Unfortunately, due to an internal miscommunication and some confusion over time zones, the development team were working under the impression that they had 24 hours longer. We don't want to rush this. The team have been working hard through the weekend to complete Backer Build One and squish as many bugs as possible.

The release date and time for Backer Build One is 12am PST on Tuesday, May 1st.

Once again, we apologise for this slight delay and thank you for your understanding.

    Delivery
Backer Build One is available to anyone who backed Phoenix Point during the Fig campaign at the "Digital Extras Edition" or higher. It is also available to customers who pre-ordered the "Luxury Digital Edition" or higher. The Backer Build may be listed in your package as "early access" or "pre-alpha access".

When the Backer Build goes live at 12am PST on Tuesday 1st of May, you will receive an email from our e-commerce partner, Xsolla. This email will contain your unique download link to the Phoenix Point installer. If you do not receive this email instantly upon launch, please do allow some extra time for the email to come through - we have a lot to send out, which may take several minutes, maybe longer.

If you still haven't received your email, check your spam folders. Emails will be delivered from mail@xsolla.com

If it hasn't arrived, you can contact Xsolla support either via email support@xsolla.com or open a support ticket at https://help.xsolla.com

    Content and Feedback
Backer Build One is a pre-alpha build of the tactical portion of the gameplay. It contains the demo map which you may have seen from the previous events that we attended. It also includes procedurally generated maps.

In Backer Build One you will play as the New Jericho faction, controlling 2 Assault soldiers, 1 Sniper and 1 Heavy. The Backer Build includes the free-aiming system introduced at EGX Rezzed and the inventory system which we have not yet showcased.

A help document is included with the download detailing key-bindings and some gameplay tips.

Should you encounter any bugs within the Backer Build (and you will), please submit a bug report. When you encounter a bug, just hit F12. The game will capture the current screenshot. You can click on the screenshot in the bug report. This will allow you to draw on and highlight any issues on the screen. You can also submit your name or email address along with a title and description of the bug. When you send the report, all of this information along with anonymous system data such as hardware configuration and the game's logs will be sent directly to the Snapshot Games QA team.

For more detailed discussion about any bugs encountered, or to leave general feedback - please visit the Snapshot Games Forum

    Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some of the questions most frequently asked about the Backer Build, with answers.

Can I stream or make YouTube videos of the Backer Build?

Yes you can. We just ask that you make it clear that you're playing an "in-development" build.

Does the Backer Build contain any of the campaign or strategic layer?

Not at this point. The Backer Build is currently only tactical combat missions. We will be updating the Backer Build approximate once every 2 months with additional content. However, we wish to hold back much of the story and campaign elements so not to spoil the narrative before general release.

Can I still get access to the Backer Build after it has released?

Yes. Even after the build has gone live, our pre-order packages will still contain access to it.

How long will the Backer Build last?

We haven't currently set an end date for the Backer Build. We will continue to add new content until close to release. If this changes we will make an announcement in good time.

Why doesn't XYZ work like this? / Why haven't you implemented XYZ?

The Backer Build is still a very small portion of the overall game. Many mechanics, abilities and features have yet to be added at this stage. Nothing in the Backer Build should be considered as the final version. If you wish to talk about detail of specific design choices, we've provided a handy feedback section on our forums.

In Phoenix Point, every single round you fire is tracked using a realistic ballistics system. Each one will travel straight on through until it meets an obstruction. Therefore, knowing what’s in front of and behind your target is crucial in staying safe on the battlefield.

So if you fire at an enemy that is next to one of your other soldiers you could end up injuring your own.
