I thought it would be nice to compile our science into a single source so everybody can easily find the results. The Barrett M107 seems to depend heavily on the optics you use. With the M107 scope your shots are all over the place and you still have to elevate when you're zeroed to the proper range. The TWS and other thermal scopes have a similar failing. They don't suffer the zeroing issue, but the shots are still inconsistent and you'll fire wide more often than not. Their thermal imaging and built in rangefinders are a large bonus though, if you don't mind wasting a few more shots per enemy. Currently my favorite scope is the NXS. Good magnification, zeroes by 100m up through the 1000s, and it's accurate. There's no random shots going wide with this thing as long as you center the cross hairs on the target and have your range dialed in. 1.5km shots are almost easy with this scope.
Skwi, I thought the HK21 had a 100 round mag. At least the one I use has it. My only complaint about it is the lack of attachments.
It may have both. I'm going to do some more checking maybe late tonight or Sunday. I was trying to work from memory, which for me usually ends in disaster.
7.62mm NATO musings With testing on the pop up targets yesterday I discovered that the ball ammo for the ABR and the SCAR-H tracer ammo both have slightly more power than the SCAR-H ball ammo. The ABR can only take its own ammo but both the SCAR-H family and the M110 SASS can use both the SCAR and the ABR magazines allowing you to take advantage of the additional power in that ammo. I've not done any long range trajectory testing so it could be that the ABR ammo falls off faster or is more susceptible to wind, but in close range penetration it was the difference of one additional pop up target knocked down.
Long range performance of the ABR 7.62 drives home it's role as a medium-long range DMR. It's precise, but not pinpoint at those ranges. Trajectories for the round, when the weapon zeroed out to 1200m are so high of a parabola that the round is traveling almost as much down as it is forward when it hits (think artillery). This trajectory leads to some ugly misses that on a flatter shot, wouldn't. That said, kills at 1200+ are possible if you take your time and wait for that moment when the target is stationary for the entire duration of the round's flight. Spoiler Thanks for the heads up on the NXS, Don. 20mil worth of marks for 10m of correction makes for some easy mid-zero shooting. Plus.. It zeroes to 1100m (unlike a lot of other scopes).
Just a note, but according to the wikipedia article (I know, it isn't gospel), a designated marksman will usually be looking at hitting targets in the 500m range. In arma, maybe 600m, but I would prefer a .408 or 12.7mm at the ranges you're talking about.
Have you compared the 7.62 HK to the SCAR? I'm going to try out the 16-inch barrel model for my medic loadout, since we seem to be doing distance more than sweep and clear of buildings
I have to 2nd the MX LSW, it seems like the best of both worlds for an LMG. I am pretty attached to 7.62 weapons, but this one may be where I look for my LMG loadout. I still think the Negev is better for close range city fighting, but the the MX LSX is better overall.
You might want to look at the MXC as well since it can use both 30 and 100 round mags. It's my preferred medic weapon because it can reach out and touch someone, then go to full auto and suppress. I'll have to do a bit of testing with it on the range to give you guys a better comparison.
The LSW has a little better effective range with the longer barrel, and I'm not totally sure but I think the ROF is a little higher as well. I'll keep that in mind for testing later tonight.
Briefly got a minute to test last night and LSW has the same fire rate as the rest of the MX series. It also seems to have the same fire rate as the Mk200, but the MX LSW feels more accurate and feels like it spreads less.
If I emptied my medic supplies I could carry over 1000 rounds but it would still be pretty heavy and fatigue would set in quickly. As it is I'm carrying 600 which seems very sufficient.
