I thought the demo was terrible for what it was to old fans. I was told what to click, where and when and had little choice about how to approach the mission. Essentially it wasn't much more than a mildly interactive cutscene.

    BUT

Is it going to stop any fans from buying it? Of course not, its fucking xcom, how fast can you take my money?

For new folks who haven't played xcom before I think it was plenty; surely they'd seen the trailer videos, maybe some game play footage, and now they were able to go through the motions and do it. The missions were simple enough, but they might not realize that (Superhuman Ethereals anyone?!?). I imagine many will pre-order the game that wouldn't have without the demo, so well done... even though I would have preferred a demo of, say 1 month of in game play to take a look at all the aspects of the game (base construction, multiple solider level ups, results of research/manufacturing, etc etc)

Did you play the second level? The first was pure tutorial, the second was free form, albeit the level was fairly linear and straight in design.

Yeah, I could have taken the routes around to the building instead of straight in... but compared to the complete flexibility of the game that I've seen in game play, it's superficial at best; but like I said, for folks who haven't had an X-COM shrine in their basement since '98, it was a good demo to get them wanting more.

I played the demo last night and am kinda siding with 00dles. I was allowed to use my rocket launcher once? Once???? Part of the fun of the game was destroying entire city blocks with rockets and high explosives to not risk a single veteran soldier's life.... I was... disappointed. Was great to see xcom updated though! But I think Xenonauts will get more play time from me. THAT preorder was what I was dreaming of. If you took the graphics from this one... and the game play from that one... THERES what I wanted! :)

Of course I will be buying this one too...

I used to use a similar tactic, though I would do it more slowly with laser rifles (especially on terror missions) and fire on the aliens with Heavy Plasma/Blaster Bombs

    Anyway

The limited rocket use was done intentionally, those sorts of heavy/special weapons attacks are treated more like abilities now, used once a mission or only in special circumstances... Probably to stop people from playing slower "no risk" games like you and I did in the past. From what I've heard, they want soldier death to really impact the game (much smaller squads, 8 man max I think) and happen more often, making true veterans both rare and extremely powerful.

6 man max. The rocket is very powerful, AoE that does a high amount of damage. Early on especially it would be OP if you could fire it every turn. The restriction works imo.

I'm constantly cash strapped, can't build 'em fancy laser and plasma rifles without some more moolah. And engineers. And workshops. and power plants. need more satellites. g'damn.

You'd figure a team dedicated to repelling alien invaders would be well supplied with elite soldiers, the best equipment, and awesome tech, but noooo.

lol....I have not got it yet but what I know I am going to hate (fear might be better word) is when my highly trained officers that I have worked on for weeks gets taken over by some damn alien mind meld and make him suicide into my whole squad and kill EVERYBODY!

This has always been one of my favorite parts of Xcom! Not having enough money and resources, and having to deal with people pulling their funding just because I pulled a team out of a terror site early, and left a bunch of civilians to get alien-buggered. The world basically ends because of red-tape and politics. It's incredibly frustrating, but still poignant!

This literally just happened to me - my best soldier was turned into a zombie and he turned around and killed everyone else

I dont think thats why the nation pulled out... Im sure they feel that if your team is NOT that much better than their own teams...Why not spend the money they would have given to you on their own teams? I think of xcom kinda like an independent contractor... kinda like US govt officials hiring private security firms to supplement their own security forces... They cost more... but they are supposed to be something special thats WORTH the extra cash... and if they ARENT... then I totally understand why funding is pulled...

Anyway this is the reasoning I used to rationalize govts pulling out of the program... Made it easier to handle :)

Honestly though. There is no way to equip your squad the way you want to in this game. Its very frustrating to always be so cash strapped. I already had to drop the difficulty slider down a notch to classic and I still cant make headway.... I dont want to just survive mission to mission... I want to WIN! I might even have to stop playing iron man style because Nobody has survived past the rank of Lt. yet... and Rookies just CANT survive against the higher level aliens... let alone a terror mission! I lost 3 of 5 on my first terror mission and couldnt afford to replace the soldiers... ugh... economy is TOUGH in this game. Not being able to sell corpses cuz you need it to make your raptors able to shoot down the UFOs... annoying!

I'm pretty sure in the original games, the governments pulled funding because they were secretly siding with the alien forces, or basically giving up resistance and choosing to negotiate (which ends laughably well).

I'm playing on normal, usually I die because of stupidity, otherwise eveyone's holding their own pretty well.

My worst moment so far was when I was trying to capture a specific live target and spent a few rounds positioning my guys to the perfect spot to execute the grab the next round. Lo and behold, the alien shoots at one of my assaults, PANICS him, he stands up and blasts him in the face with a shotgun and kills him...

    grr

yeah, in the original game I used to just buy soldiers in lots of 10 or 20 and fire the ones without GREAT bravery stats :) Cant do that here :)

my biggest gripe is that you have no idea what a soldier is going to spec in. If I just lose my sole support guy, I may have to train 3-4 guys up to the first level to get a single support. You basically have to take a rookie every game just to get them to level so you can fill out your team when someone dies.

Not really! Cuz in the OLD game I could just give every single team member a backpack full of HE Bricks and blow the holy crap out of anything that MIGHT be a chrys. Sure the civilians might not be too happy about being turned to red paste, but my entire squad of Elite Veterans (and 1 or 2 red shirted trainees) were VERY happy about living through another terror mission!

I was playing the tutorial and the scientist lady told me I needed to capture an alien alive. I was trying to tell my roomate about the old game and how I used to arm rookies with a stun prod and a primed grenade and send them rushing in. You come back with that live alien, or you don't come back at all! The red-shirts man... They had a rough life under my command. It's not exactly the same in this game, but the feeling is still there. Some dudes are just meatshields... I think I need to start over on a harder difficulty. Not enough death.
