Yeah, but usually there is a graphic of the engine on fire or a "It's gonna blow" prompt.... This one just randomly 'sploded.

A Heavy from South Korea earned a nickname for me last night.... I have renamed him "Seoul Man".

Being killed by a Thin Man will probably cause poor Hosni to haunt those grounds for eternity looking for answers.

Played this over the weekend on my brother's comp. Buying it later tonight. During my play through selected classic, and accidentally triggered an late stage story flag early on by capturing a high level alien. Shit got real fast. Mutons everywhere, Russia, Japan and France withdrew from xcom after being over run. Had two really awesome guys. A korean sniper code named "Zeus" who brought down the thunder, and a Swede named Capt. Pederson who single handedly salvaged a mission with his shotgun, taking out 3 mutons in a row :viking: and allowed Zeus to fall back to safety. Everyone else died. Later on all my mainliners were injured while a Large ufo got shot down, so I had to send out a squad full of rookies against floaters and mutons or lose my base's country ... they all came back alive and became my new Beta team. Getting this game TONIGHT.

Gotta get back around to DF sometime I suppose. I should get around to inviting a few friends over skype and livestreaming let's plays in a bit starting with XCOM probably. Midterms are finally done. Tasing mutons into submission with the tesla arc gun is fun stuff btw.

    Gentlemen:
I will now recount to you my finest hour in XCOM.

The map was a construction zone in a desert-y country (egypt i think), a "Very Difficult" drop.

Just upgraded to a 6 man squad. 2 Heavy, 1 support, 1 snipers, 2 assault. Beam weapons available to all except the heavies, only body armor available.

Squad dropped just outside of a light perimeter wall into the construction zone, only way in was the 3 tile opening immediately in front of them. Alright boys, lets do this. I deployed my squad conservitively, 5 moving (not dashing) in ready to overwatch at turns end.

Spotting nothing, I dashed my last man in, seeing as he would be covered by 5 troops either able to go into overwatch or fire at spotted enemies.

The dash revealed 2 mutons on my left flank... My medic was right there on the choping block so rather than fire I pulled him back to the right flank.

This revealed 2 mutons behind a cargo container on my right flank.

I popped an upgraded smoke over the units that were caught in between. My #*(%& sniper missed a right flank muton, though a heavy hit him for 4. I didn't have enough good shots to take down the mutons with the rest of my men, so rather than only damage the mutons I had those most exposed hunker down and took a potshot which missed.

    Alien Actiity... Surrounded...

Right flank mutons moved to either side of the container and each fired at seperate troopers, one hit for 5, another missed (thank you smoke!)
The two left flank mutons both fired at covered men in the smoke and also missed!

I had spread out enought that a grenade wouldn't be all that effective, which saved me.

Out of the woods? Not yet. 3 Mutons came in down the center... 7 mutons right off the bat, all gunning for me. This was getting desperate.

    My turn... Bitches.
The 3 mutons that just came in were fairly clustered, both my heavies had rocket lines to them and detonated their asses.
The Sniper shot the wounded Muton (only line of fire without moving) and manage to hit this time, finishing him off.
Support moved and fired on the two right flank mutons, tagged one of them.
One assault run and gunned right up next to the remaining right flank muton. Double Tap, dead.
The other assault was able to get into a similar position from the unwouned left flank muton such that he was covered from the wounded muton. Double Tap, dead.

6 mutons down, 1 wounded one to go.
It retreated and fired at the assault, but did not kill him, and was promptly finished off the next round.

Tough mission, lets go home... wait, the mission isn't over?

I started to reposition for the push deeper into the map, but the aliens came to me before I had much of a chance. A cyber disc and two drones.

I had another mover before the aliens fired on me, so I set up what I thought would be a deadly firing line and started opening up. A bunch of misses on the disc and no sniper shot. Crap.

Disc lauched a grenade, thankfully only to target one trooper, and tagged him for 5. The drones moved up and finished him off and wounded another...

So this is how it ends, is it?

Man over machine! My sniper took out one of the drones. My heavy moved up but had to overwatch as he had no shot. Then my assaults... My lovely assaults... Both run and gunned in close to the disc (not too close, though) both double tapped and took down the disc!

With only the drone left, it moved away and got caught by the heavy's overwatch and he shot it out of the sky!

    Mission OVER!

7 mutons, 1 cyber disc, 2 drones. Only 1 dead, despite the nasty tactical scenario.

yeah, I wish my missions went like that. If i'm playing on classic and sometimes even normal, 50% casualties PER MISSION is about average.

I always play on ironman, so man points there I guess, but classic kicks my ass way before I even see most of those baddies.

I'm doing quasi-ironman at the moment. Since I'm still figuring out the ropes of the game, it was getting frustrating having everything collapse in an ironman game and have to start over entirely.

Right now I have ironman off, but I save maybe once every hour or two and only reload if something asinine happens, like I mis-click with a rocket and kill 3 of my own men instead of 4 of theirs.

When you are ready to take off the training wheels, come find me. The Long War mod makes the game more brutal, but it fixes a lot of issues and adds a bunch of new and really cool content. It makes an already great game even better. Just don't be scared by the increase in difficulty; it is tough but very fair. I can also show you some tricks to make the experience easier.
