If its just a skin nothing there to get worked up about... also not pre-ordering paradox. I will buy this game, but will wait like a few days to make sure its actually functional.
Just to clear things up a bit if somebody hasn't been reading dev diaries and/or other info. There's 6 main categories of species at the start. Arthropoid, avian, fungoid, mammalian, molluscoid and reptilian. Under these are decent selection of different species portraits you can use for your custom race. The portrait/avatar/skin of your race doesn't have direct impact to gameplay (roleplaying and visuals) but category changes interaction with other species depending on the situation. For example, xenophobe mammalians will not get along with arthropoids easily but will probably tolerate other mammalians a bit. Whereas xenophile empire will be mostly fine with any kind of aliens. Categories have also their own set of ship and planetary designs, but you can mix those freely when making your own race. Seems pretty obvious Paradox will add more visual variety as DLC and I'm mostly okay with that. Hopefully we'll get silicon category too for all Silicoid and Chenjesu fans. Also, modders will be all over the game when it gets going so no worries there I dare to say.
mmm chenjesu. Why can't anyone make a good SC2-esque game? Explore the galaxy, meet aliens, find worlds, mine resources. Mass Effect aaaaaalmost got there, but was too linear FPS for me.
Arthropoid: Avian: Fungoid: Mammalian: Molluscoid: Reptilian: There may also be plant group either in final version or as DLC. It was spotted in one of the streams as option in empire creation. Also, all of the portraits can have cloth variations or at least color variations as they are used for population and leaders/scientist/military commanders. Humans will also have some basic customization, skin color etc.
In 2014 I approached Paradox with our early 4x space strategy game. They said "looks nice but bad timing!" I'm glad they didn't go ahead with it - it wouldn't have worked. There were several conceptual flaws. I'm really excited about Stellaris. Cautious but excited. These games often fall so short of what you hope for them but then again they've been working on it a long time and they've got a good vision guiding them. I hope they don't dumb it down like those wargaming fuckers with Moo.
I will keep telling it until I'm fully banned. Then I will keep sending it through various other means until I die/am killed. It is my way of saying "...kill me..."
