Windows 10 is programmed to seek and disable pirated games

A new update to the Windows 10 EULA reveals the OS’s ability to immobilise pirated software. The newly changed section 7B describes how Microsoft can investigate software to check its version, and then download configuration changes. Should they be needed, these changes can prevent the software from working completley.

"We may automatically check your version of the software and download software updates or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorised hardware peripheral devices," the reads section 7B of Windows 10’s EULA.

It’s clear then that Windows 10 has systems that can scan your installed programs and detect pirated software, and then stop that software from working. Pirated games will be rendered useless by Microsoft’s new code.

The EULA also notes that “unauthorised hardware peripheral devices” will also be disabled, which is a more unusual subject that pirated software. It’s not clear if this refers to fake and imitation products, or things like modified controllers that grant the user an unfair edge.

Even though I'm basing my livelihood on selling games, I say fuck that. I don't think I'll be getting Win10 anytime soon.

It seems everything is bunch of american legal bullshit and hidden gems like "oh by the way the OS is doing all sorts of things and we decided to block this cheap controller you bought because fuck you"

It looks like Microsoft are slowly turning Windows into Xbox. At least they let us manage our files. Do they? At least for now.

I was thinking originally that there had to be a catch to Win10 being free. Now I am beginning to see.

I wonder if there's a clause somewhere that any code and assets I create using Win10 will belong to them and they'll make sure by sending all my shit onto their servers. Sorry, not servers but "cloud". Ffs.

pretty much everything is going to the cloud. alot of GIS software is slowly moving to the cloud instead of having a CD/DVD simply because of size now (and it's easier for users to access). probably alot of business stuff is eventually moving to the cloud in some form. hell already most pc games are "in the cloud" since that's really just the catch phrase for online access to it. Yep everything is going to cloud computing. pc gaming has already gone to it with how every game now is available over the internet.

Yea but "cloud" just means someone else's computer. I'd never store certain type of data on 3rd party company that uses 4th party hardware in fifth country.

Games etc. is quite different. Also, if games are available over the internet, it's not the same as them being in the "cloud", eg. running them remotely from someone's server. I do that stuff in-house and for games I couldn't care less where they're at, often it would be just nice to be able to have all the computing capacity you needed from someone's server and you'd just pay an affordable rate and worry about your virtual helmets etc. Though that would require quite heavy investments to internet infrastructure because just transmitting full hd seems to be out of reach for a huge number of people.

Also, many games just can't be played from cloud. FPS? Yea, try controlling your character when you first add ~200ms latency to every input, then another 200ms before you get the feedback. Even with 50ms it can be unbearable and I've tried it.

At some point people may also be able to have good internet connections wherever they go. But we're not there yet.

And whenever someone thinks it's ok that they just steal my confidential data from my computer and move it all over the internet, I am going to have a big issue with that. I will never use Win10 for any business stuff unless I can have some sort of a version that sends zero data to their servers and is not keeping a zillion backdoors open towards Microsoft's unreliable servers. And it's not even just about their servers being hacked, it has to do with having half a dozen different countries through which the data travels, most of which are engaged in officially acknowledged internet espionage and data-analysis, essentially meaning these countries grab traffic and do as they please with it and try to find out what different entities are sending.

Whether it's trendy or not, I'm keeping my sensitive stuff to myself.

what I meant with the games is you still get it through cloud computing even though all the data is on your own machine.

oddly I haven't had any issues with windows 10 so far. other than the annoyance of it downloading updates when I'm playing a game. it doesn't force a restart to install but I kinda wish for the "choose what you download and when you download". you can choose when to install but not what or when. It's just automatic installation or "notify me to schedule a restart".

My computer is using older stuff though (i3 processor an HD 6450 graphics and such) so maybe that's why I haven't really had any issues (yet) simply because this stuff has been around longer and whatever bugs there were, were worked out before windows 10 even came out? I would get a new PC if I had money.

I've done both of mine at home with no issues at all. Probably going to get the work computers done this week.

It's also possible it may affect non-pirated games, because, every DRM in the past has had a million issues. Also, it may affect peripherals that Microsoft doesn't like.

except that, if you read the article, the issue is effectively misinterpreted slander against Windows 10 and not actually true for the OS itself.
