yeah that was my take as well on it, they are effectively limiting their market to only people with broadband internet or those that have no internet connectivity. (as long as there aren't any recurring mandatory check ins required by the os) I'm going to sit down and talk with my organization's technology department. Since we specialise in developing logistical and technological support solutions for organizations operating in very remote locations around the world I suspect they have already been brainstorming a solution to the updates or atleast what to do instead of windows 10 for people like aid workers in the most remote parts of the world that might get to share a satellite connection every couple of months. That or we will have to start a social media campaign slamming microsoft for hating starving children around the world and trying to kill them by keeping aid workers from doing their job because of their new update system. I think the latter might be fun, but I suspect their lawyers might not be so pleasant to deal with.

At the moment I have only one universal solution for Win10:
    Uninstall.

Even better: don't install in the first place. I'm gonna ride Win7 until they shoot the damn thing and put it out of its misery, then probably switch to Linux. I'm glad y'all have been discussing it here, since most reviews of Win10 are fairly positive. Things like auto-updates that CANNOT be turned off don't seem to get mentioned as much. I always set my updates to notify me and then I download and install them when I damn well please.

Hell, first reviews of Battlefield 4 were overly positive.

    Did they lie?
I mean, they're MEDIA! You can trust reviews, right?

Then after everyone had bought it they suddenly started using sentences like "as we all know it was released in an abysmal state" etc. Except that they didn't say that, they praised the fucking game.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlefield_4#Reception

So, I'm a little bit skeptic about overly positive media reviews as of late. Especially after reading in Quora professionals offering marketing tips essentially saying
"pay for good reviews..." "...user acquisition cost is x$ per user..."

Here's the actual chart of what Win10 you will be eligible to get for free and what it will have and what it won't have.

Home version seems rather shitty, with no real right to touch the update schedule options etc. and all the other good stuff it's missing.

and I'm pretty sure if you haven't let it install the updates yet it slows your computer down till you install. at least that's how it always feels to me.

I'm still gonna stick to W7 for Win needs. After some testing there's no way I'm developing on anything but W7.

Also I'm not eligible for a W10 version that didn't let me update as I shut the computer down, among other things. And then there's the stuff about it sending all sorts of shit about my system and files to their servers. I'll much prefer maximum privacy and security for my business docs and such.

Also, I hear a lot of people saying "oh, W10 is the best so far" - I'm not seeing it making any real difference to me. Even the only advantage it has, having DX12 solely for it - is an artificial advantage imposed by Microsoft, but I'm not needing DX12 to run my games at ultra high.

Everything that I've seen says that windows 7 is getting all the same things for sending information back to microsoft through updates, if you don't want to give up security there is no windows version that you can buy today. Best bet is windows 10, while defaulted to send stuff, you actually can select to turn it off, not sure that you can do that with windows 7.

Considering the data mining they are doing it's hard to believe they won't be hacked within a year or so.

    Ah, thanks for notifying!

So I think I'll be needing to keep the more sensitive stuff crypted on my Fedora.

Oh I bet they already have a ton of deals for automatically distributing their datamining database to a bunch of people. So it's already about how trustworthy their unannounced partners and they themselves are.

    Plus what you said.

Also, a lot of the datamining data goes through a bunch of countries that are openly or secretly sniffing everything that goes through them, not to mention non-government actors and such.

While I'm not developing anything interesting and most people don't even want to read my files, for me it's very much a matter of privacy. I don't like 1984.

True hackers want you to sniff there stuff, that is how they get in. much easier for them to let you in then to force your way in.

Well, you should've read the finnish translation that predates dinosaurs. It enhanced the experience.

Words like "undermachinegun" instead of submachinegun even though SMG was a known word at the time. "Remote shader" for surveillance devices etc., as in a lamp shader... And a ton of other gems.

Nice find Fet, while this one deals with the pre release version he has also found ways to work around on both the pro and home editions. It looks like these may be the most promising fixes for my situation with windows 10. Once I'm back in the office this week I'll talk to the guys in our it department and see what they have found so far.

They really want you to install Win10.

For instance, inquiry on Hololens dev kit resulted in a recommendation to install Win10 immediately. Also it apparently only works on W10.

Not necessarily a surprise though, I guess there's a heavy push towards being forced to adopt W10.
