you mean how like mac OSX was "free" a few years ago? "free" after you had to pay $20 to upgrade to a previous OS (if you didn't have it already). "free" since you already paid $1000 or more for a shitty (my opinion) computer? of course by that reasoning windows 10 is "free" too.

It's free because your not the customer. nothing is ever free in this world, someone always pays the cost of the product. This time around it just so happens to be advertising companies or stolen proprietary information to be sold off behind curtains.

I seriously can't see any company that wants any sort of internal security ever using windows 10.

I agree. From what I'm reading I will never be installing W10 on any of our company machines. It may be on one of the "let's check the weather and watch Netflix" laptops, for a test.

As for the next OS after W7, (to me W8 never even existed) will most likely be one of Linux distributions once Unity starts offering full support for it, they've had a version under the works for some time now but are not yet ready to offer full support. Just have to hope that Microsoft doesn't kick in their doors and say "NO" and shut down that Linux support project.

In the meantime I'll have a dual OS for playing games, a W7 installation that I can boot to when I play. If they ever get rid of W7 then I suppose I'll just just wine or something to run everything under Linux.

Well, I have to say that this Win 10 is a great release.

I finally recognized the need to dive into Linux and I've now got a KDE Fedora running on my laptop and holy shit it's a lot nicer than Windows. Point 1 - it originally came with Gnome but I don't personally like Gnome so I could switch to KDE which I like a whole lot better. Can't really do stuff like that with Windows. You're pretty much stuck with what you've got.

Also, no need to have a constant antivirus running (use common sense instead) and overall a lot lighter OS that you can turn into what you want. And everything's free too, no one's sniffing out your data and sending them to some server etc. And I can always have a second boot option of Windows when I really need to do something in it. Win-win.

Also, it was nice to be able to have the entire installation encrypted from start! None of that "I'll just boot with Live USB and grab your data".

I should thank Microsoft for Win 10. Finally got my shit together. When I install Fedora on rest of my computers (~5-10 minute install, all of it) I'll have increased performance and security. Not bad.

holy shit. figuring out where to go to uninstall a program that you don't need anymore is not intuitive in windows 10. I thinks it's this whole "all programs are known as apps now" thing that's screwing with me.

One does not simply 'sudo apt-get remove <appname>' in Windows.

Nor does one simply 'sudo dnf install <appname>' in Windows either.

You know what I was most surprised about when I first booted to Linux was... there was no big ass "WELL HELLO THERE WELCOME TO OUR OS WOULD YOU LIKE TO BUY STUFF? CHECK OUT THESE WEATHER PAGES..." filling up the whole damn view.

Oh and there was no fucking Jamie Oliver whatever it is app installed as default.

It installed cortana automatically for you? There must be different versions depending on country.

The store hasnt opened automatically for me. One of those privacy things i turned off needs to be on to install cortana.

No I'm sorry for confusion, those were pre-10 windows versions. As for 10 I don't know if it starts with a gigantic popup 'welcome screen'.

I'm sticking to W7 for where I need windows and elsewhere I'll never get 8 and especially not 10 until it can be 100% guaranteed that it won't be sending any of my shit to some windows server. I may come around once people gain enough experience from 10 and find/create something by which that stuff can be disabled for good.

I've got all my cool bookmarks on an encrypted drive in an encrypted folder written in a language I invented myself.

I don't want Microsoft to get a hold of any of it.

for those of us trying to actually work with the new os....

Does anyone know the effects of operating a windows 10 computer for extended times off line (say months at a time)
Or... Operating it with a very minimal connection (say 36k modem or shared satellite internet feed) something that would prevent updates from being downloaded.

The province that I'm moving to in Indonesia is still way behind the rest of the world for internet (shoot the electricity is only "mostly reliable") so having to pay per kilobyte on a very weak connection is really the only thing keeping me from upgrading to windows 10 since any forced updates, or need to check in regularly, would leave me with most likely corrupted data and a huge internet bill that I'd rather avoid at all costs.

well there's no reason you can't simply disable automatic updates, and perform them manually as you feel needed, it's like any previous windows in that regard, the only significant problem with not updating regularly is potential security issues. However, that said it's also pretty 'data intensive' so unless you're planning on disconnecting from the internet when you're not using it, I wouldn't trust it not to access things passively without a severe scouring of every app and program that accesses the net passively before you go anywhere. It's not 'heavy' by the current standards of OS, but it's still not as light as something like Ubuntu, so if you're going to have to download it on a limited connection speed it may take forever and a day.

Then again limited connection also helps against security issues - if you're not really connected, you're not really going to get attacked as much. Firewall and security software > windows security.

    You're all exhausting.

Anyone else finding themselves interested in the Lumia 950 now that all their other devices are Windows 10? Being able to run Android apps using a Windows device sounds groovy. Not that I use many apps and I never game on a phone

could be interesting. other than occasionally solitaire I don't put games on my phone for the simple reason it eats up battery power. tablet sure I have games on. plus phone screens are small for games.

Soul mate. I really *enjoy* playing games on a shitty machine with a tiny screen while having my hand in front of the screen.

It's not even close as bad on a reasonably sized tablet, though I still long for those 17" tablets. :glee:

That is painful. I was at dragoncon since thursday morning (meaning my desktop with windows was off till 8 pm eastern monday) and its taking a long time to start up because of downloading updates. Which i thought i had turned that shit off. Id say windows is not recommended with out a steady connection.

Well long compared to normal. Normal startup is 2 minutes or less (usually. Yeah yeah i have a slow computer). But its taking 20+ minutes because of downloading and restarting. And applying. And this is just 4 or 5 days. I dont want to think what a month off would be like. Now if they made it so you couldnt download at all it may be fine.

I like to have the downloads occur in the background and then be installed when I shut it down for night.

If working on low specs or slow connection or both, full manual. I don't think they'd have that sort of feature removed.

It is in the home version from what I can tell, you have to get the professional version to allow scheduling updates but even then you can only postpone it for a little while.
