I still don't know, the game has some really cool ideas and gameplay but it just falls flat for me in the end. Maybe it's because there are technically only two concepts in the game, go around collecting stuff to get better stuff and go around to name new stuff. They just do this to the extreme.
It's great for those that enjoy this exploration genre, I suppose. It looks really nice and all, just be mindful of what you expect from it.
still really wondering how this game will hold attention in the long term. certainly there are plenty of gamers out there who just want to go bumming around without any "goal," but based on what he was talking about on the colbert report that players may not ever even run into other players (5:50) also, who gives access to this fabled NSFW section? gimmegimme

NSFW = Now Smoking Fine Weed, right? Right? I'm right ain't I? (It's what the naked man in the stairwell told me.... ) Anyways..... NO MAN"S SKY: If you were like me as a teen, I read lots of Sci-Fi and Fantasy. I love sci-fi. If you enjoyed the novels of Larry Niven, Arthur C. Clark, Fredrick Pohl, Issac Azimov, H.G. Wells and a host of other sci-fi authors old and new. If you liked Ringworld or The Known Space novels. Rendezvous With Rama. Childhood's End. Caves of Steel. The Lensman. The Mote In God's Eye. Asimov's Foundation Books. Star Trek TOS, Heinlein and more.... My instincts and gut impression is that there is a Galactic/Cosmic Caretaker/Gardener from the beginning of time (think ancient like Babylon Five or Mass Effect) that's not malevolent but staunchly lawful neutral like a Skynet version of a Druid. You begin to screw with the eco system and Motherboard CyberNature will come gunning for YOU. Now what's cool? Not only is there all of this computer auto generated (insert very geeky words that explain stuff here.) wild life and worlds (along with the Cosmic Construct) these empires that you see fighting each other? They too are auto generated. So there is a lot that is going on without you. AI Empire vs AI Rebels destroying a planet which brings in the Cosmic Constructs vs the global impact a war would have on a planet vs its wildlife. Now you spawn in the game. I'm not sure of the back story but for some reason (and I do believe Sean said that there is an in game reason.) mankind is scattered about the cosmos. Now, what to do? Well, I'm sure that you will have to fix the immediate predicament that your in. That's pretty much how they all begin. You are naked. First Quest: Get Clothes. Side Quest: Harvest Fibers (used for making clothes), next tools or weapons, etc... There are trading posts so if one wants you could go exploring/mining/hunting for $$$. However doing those acts will bring the attention of the Cosmic Construct. Trading with the Local AI Post may bring the Regional AI Empire snooping around. One could choose sides. Of course one could build there own planetary empire within there remote solar system and be happy and content until the Galactic Wide Empire comes to collect it's share from YOU. All the while fighting the Cosmic Construct. By the way, what of this Cosmic Construct? Who built it? Who controls it? All the clues to those answers and more await you at the center of the Galaxy where you will meet the ATLAS and begin your true journey. I can not wait for this game. All of the above is me just connecting the dots from all of the Sean Murray interviews. What's not to get excited about! Sean has reluctantly said that the social aspect of the game will be addressed in such a way as too not break the immersive feel of that you are alone but not quite. Out there, somewhere. There are others like YOU. What will you do when you come across your fellow man? What will he do? I think that there will be an ability to group once the campaign is finished or a portion of the questing is done. I know the center of the galaxy was mention in regards to this (as well as the ATLAS). Well, that's 2 cents...peace out! (Who put the mirror in the stairwell?)

Eh not sinking $60 until someone gets their hands on it and reports back whether its more than just a pretty shell.
The game looks great and amazing visually. There is no really objective just what you make of it. And i and many other would most likely get bored within the first 15 hrs of playing, who knows. But im going to get it anyhow so i can see for myself if i would enjoy it or not. I can then atleast say it was my own decision not to play and have someone bitching for me to play later on and tell me how awesome it is just to let me down and abandon me. If i like it, woopi.
